FG Free Education Textbooks On Sale In Abia Markets

Books acquired by the Universal Basic Education, for free distribution to pupils are on sale in the open market in Umuahia, Abia State capital.
UBE customized books are produced by the Federal Government and ought to be distributed free to pupils.
Though it is boldly marked “not for sale”, Vanguard learnt that teachers have been asking parents to go and buy the books in the open market, an action that smacks of connivance.
“Governor Orji must be mad with those involved in this illegal act,” an aggrieved father said in an interview.
A mother, who simply identified herself as Maureen, disclosed that she was given a list of books to buy for her children and paid N1,100 to acquire “Pupil Book 1 UBE Edition Learn Mathematics for Primary Schools.”
When confronted, Chief Micah Onyebuchi, ASUBEB chairman in the state, said the books which were being sold in the open market, were not meant for Abia State schools.
Onyebuchi said that all the books from UBE for the state were sent to his office directly, adding that they had been distributed to the schools in the state.
He stressed that the books were customized and not meant to be sold.
He said: “When the books are sent down to us, we stamp them with ASUBEB stamp beside the UBE/FGN not for sale and are given out to the pupils and I am sure that nobody in this office is playing pranks with the books meant to be given to pupils for free.

Babcock varsity trains naval officers

The consultancy outfit of Babcock University, Ilishan – Remo, Ogun State, Babcock Consulting is holding a two-day Maritime Management Course.
The exercise, which holds at the university premises and ends tomorrow, is in collaboration with the Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association.

The Vice-Chancellor has approved the appointment of Dr Edeheudiem B. Etuk, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Animal Science and Technology as the new FUTO Alumni Relations Officer with effect from July 1, 2013.
Dr Etuk will oversee the affairs of the University Alumni office and expand the existing relations with the FUTO Alumni Association.

ASUU strike: Thereis no need for the lecturers to continue – President Jonathan

ABUJA-President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said there was no need for the Academic Staff Union of Universities to continue with their industrial action.
Mr. Jonathan said this at the inauguration of the Federal Government sponsored-Transformation Projects at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).
Represented by Ruqayyat Rufai, the Minister of Education, the president said N30 billion had been released for the payment of earned allowances in all public universities.
The president said that the inaugurated projects were in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to providing quality education in the country. He said the projects were based on the need assessment exercise conducted by the Federal Government in universities.
University lecturers have been on a nationwide strike for over 8 weeks with the lecturers demanding a full implementation of a 2009 agreement it had with the federal government. While the government says it has provided N30 billion for earned allowances of lecturers, the lecturers said about N92 billion is required to completely offset the earned allowances of the concerned lecturers. That and other demands are the reasons the lecturers have continued with their strike.
Mr. Jonathan also urged the FUTO administration to engage in research for national development, while stressing the need for proper maintenance of completed projects.
The Vice Chancellor of FUTO, Chidozie Asiabaka, in his speech, expressed joy at the completion of the structure.
Mr. Asiabaka noted that the projects had gone a long way in tackling the dearth of basic infrastructure in the school.
“The dearth of classrooms, lecture theatres, power supply, student hostels, office accommodation, library space and facilities are major challenges my administration faced when I assumed office two years-ago,’’ he said.
The vice chancellor said with the intervention of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, the university got 1000 sitting-capacity lecture theatre, Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies Building.
He said the inaugurated projects are the new Engineering Technology, School of Environmental Technology Building, Centre for Nuclear Energy Studies and Training and the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology building complexes.
The others are the School of Environmental Technology building, landscaping of the campus and the provision of solar energy lights on the campus.
He also commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on the completion of the giant student hostel building in the university.
He lauded the Federal Government for the release of N1 billion for the development of capital projects in each public funded university.

French to be part of UTME from 2014

Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa'I, said on Thursday in Abuja that French language would be part of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination as from 2014 for interested candidates, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Rufa'I said this at a reception held in honour of the French Language Project Manager, Mr. Jean-Phillipe Roy.
She said that being multi-lingual in the 21st Century was essential asit helps individuals to operate more effectively in the international community.
"For Nigeria, the study of French language is quite key, considering the fact that our neighbouring countries are French-speaking. Apart from the English language, French language is one of the major international languages," she said.
She said Roy came to Nigeria in 2009 under the second Bilateral Agreement between Nigeria and French.
The minister noted that the French had worked hard to ensure that various components of the project received due attention.
Rufa'i lauded his contributions to the reform of the UTME for 2014 in addition to the scholarships awarded to 16 teachers of French language to study in France for one month.
She said the project manager's contributions included supply of books to schools, award of Master's degree in French as a foreign language and supply of DVD and CD player to the project office.
The minister lauded the support of the French Government to the Nigerian French Language Village, Badagry, Lagos; and the Regional Network of French Language centres in Africa.
She also commended the Association of French Language Teachers, and noted the proposed handing over of the project vehicle to the ministry for the monitoring of the teaching and learning of the language.
"Nigeria and France have come a long way in their relationship. It is a relationship built on mutual respect, cooperation and interest. I wish to assure you that the ministry will continue to be committed to the teaching and learning of French Language in Nigeria and sustenance of the cordial relationship,'' she said.
Roy praised the collaboration between the Federal Government and the French Government.
"Since I have been here, you have shown a lot of interest in what we have been trying to do in terms of decision-making in critical issues and, with your help, we have been able to keep the project on the right track," he said.

How to check 2013/2014 admission status on JAMB website (All Schools)

JAMB, the official body charged with the responsibility of registering, organizing and administering unified entrance examinations to applicants for admission into tertiary schools in Nigeria today August 29th, 2013 released admission status check for prospect students who did excellently well in the 2013 UTME nationwide.
Thus, irrespective of whether or not admission list has been released by a particular school, candidates who applied for that school can now check via JAMB to know if they are hopeful in the school merit admission list or not.
It has to be noted though that one may see his/her status as "admitted" by JAMB and in the end miss admission in the choice school. This is the case where one scores well in JAMB, and obtain a very lowscore in the school post UTME screening.

ASUU to FG: N92 billion Is a Debt, Not a New Demand

The AcademicStaff Union of Universities, ASUU, on August 22, 2013, Thursday, described as highly embarrassing, the statement credited to the Coordinating Minister of the economy and Ministerof Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
The statement said that the lecturers were making a fresh demand from the Federal Government.
Dr. Usman Abubakar, ASUU zonal coordinator in Bauchi, told the newsmen that ASUU was not making fresh demand, but asking for the implementation of existing agreement, while the Minister's position was opposite.
"Contrary to the Minister's assertion that "ASUU is demanding for N92 billion", we wish to inform the public that the said amount is a debt, not a demand. It is a debt the Federal Government is owing staff of affected universities (both academic and non-academic) over a period of four years. The Federal Government has to pay, if it has to show signs of a responsible and honourable government."
The ASUU coordinator also expressed shock at the insincerity and antics of the government, saying the Minister's pronouncement was a deliberate and calculated attempt to blackmail ASUU, confuse the public and reduce ASUU's patriotic cause to a mere payment of allowances.
According to Dr. Abubakar, the Minister's comment is an indication that government had no intention of honouring the agreement, saying "how could the minister have made the claim of no money to honour the agreement when the finance ministry was represented throughout the negotiations in the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement and the MoU. What could be more dishonourable and deceitful by a government than this?

Groups protest against FG-ASUU impasse

Some civil society groups and students' organisations, on Tuesday, staged a protest march against the prolonged impasse between the Federal Government and the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The placard-carrying protesters said the Federal Government-ASUU disagreement had paralysed academic work in the universities.
The angry groups includethe Concerned Nigerian Students; Coalition of EdoYouths Organisation; EdoYouth Congress; Edo State Students; Comrade Across the Nation; South-South Youth League; and Edo Youth for Good Government.
They converged on the Nigeria Union of Journalists' Press Centre, in Benin, berating the Federal Government over what they described as government's unwillingness to address the rot in the nation's universities.
The protesters, who brandished placards with inscriptions such as, "Weare Nigerian Undergraduates Unemployed," "Education is a Right," and "Federal Government Answer ASUU," among others, said the break down in the FG/ASUU talk should be blamed on the former.
Former ASUU chairman, University of Benin chapter, Dr. Kashetu Ilavbare, said the presence of some of the ASUU members in the midst of the protesters was to guide them, so that they would not take the laws into their hands.
He said, "We don't have anything to do with them; but we got information that they were on the road, so we came to guide them so that they will not destroy anything and to make it peaceful. You can see they are rational people.
"There is need for infrastructure both in theschools and outside, so that is why we are trying to ensure they don't go on the rampage."
The protesters in a statement read by one Omobude Agho, called on patriotic Nigerians to support the action and toenlighten parents and others on why they were agitating.
The statement read in part, "Investigations have shown that the issues at stake are far and above the demand for higher wages. ASUU has resumed its strike because the Federal Government of Nigeria has failed to honour the agreement that it enteredinto with ASUU in 2009.
"This agreement provided for governmentfunding of quality higher education for Nigerians. Provision of teaching andlearning facilities, lab equipment for science students and research grants, payment of earned allowances, retirement age and progressive increase in annual budgetary allocation to the educational sector of 26 per cent, which is the UN standard.
"ASUU has used all alternatives possible in labour relations: lobbying, negotiations, letters, warning strikes, begging, press releases and conferences. However, government has refused to honour the agreement that it willingly signed with ASUU."

Court remands 4 for allegedly dumping 2 children in stream

BAUCHI — The Bauchi State Chief Magistrate’s court has remanded four suspects who allegedly dumped two children in Dumi stream, in Bauchi Local Government Area.
It was recently reported that two children were dumped inside a stream by unknown persons in Bauchi. One of the children died while the other survived.
The four suspects including the parents of the children were arrested by the Police and arraigned in court.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Amos Ukpe, had filed two separate cases over the incident.
In the first case, he charged the four suspects with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, contrary to sections 221 and 96 of the penal code.
Ukpe also charged the parents of the child who survived for criminal conspiracy and abandonment, contrary to sections 96 and 237 of the penal code.
The prosecutor told the court that a ward head of Gwallaga, Mallam Dandada Ahmadu reported to the Bauchi Township police station that a woman called Sakina Ibrahim of Dajin Village in Tafawa Balewa Local Government who claimed to be a herbalist told the two parents that their children were not normal human beings and advised them to dump them in the stream so that they will drown to which the parents complied.
Inspector Ukpe said: “When the herbalist in company of the parents took the children and dumped them inside stream in Dumi village, one of the children, Adamu Suleiman Danjuma (two years) survived and was rescued by good Samaritans while the other boy, Aliyu Suleiman Haruna (four years old) got drowned and died in the stream.

NANS plans protest to end ASUU strike

LAGOS—National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, plans to hold a nation-wide protest as a last resort to force the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to end the protracted strike of university lecturers.
NANS’ President, Yinka Gbadebo, responding to allegations that the students’ body was not bothered by the 60-day-old strike, said the union had been employing other matured approaches to appeal to both the government and ASUU.
According to him, “NANS is not relaxed but we have decided to take approaches that don’t require us to make noise. We have been meeting with executive members of ASUU, the Nigerian Universities Commission, Minister of Education and the FG.
“We have also written to meet with the universities NEEDS Implementation Committee chairman and Governor of Benue State, Mr. Gabriel Suswan. If we don’t receive any response by the end of the week, we would issue an ultimatum and take it up from there.
“I have been consulting with all SUG leaders in the affected schools so that we would speak with one voice. Going to the streets would be our last option but we would do so to protest how long this strike has lingered.

ASUU Rejects FG Offers; Says Strike Must Continue

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday, rejected. the N130 billion the Federal Government disbursed into the university system, as part of efforts to persuade striking lecturers to call off the strike which began on July 2.
In a letter written to Head of National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy, NEEDs Assessment, and Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswan, by President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge. The union insisted that based on the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement and the January 2012 Memoranda of Understanding, MoU, signed by both parties, what was due for 2012 and 2013 was N500 billion, not N100 billion.
The letter read: “We observe that the Committee is so far mentioning only N100 billion. If the implementation is to be related to the funding requirements in the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement and the Jan 2012 MoU, what is due for 2012 and 2013 is N500 billion not N100 billion. Only the provision of this sum will meet the immediate needs of the universities.
“Our Union is very apprehensive of the manner in which the sources of the initial N100 billion to be used for the stimulation of the process are shrouded in secrecy. We believe that monies that already belong to the university system should not be blocked and recycled.
“This will not only be counter productive but will brew even deeper crises in the system. ASUU will not accept this.
“We are also concerned that a clear procedure or process for assessing the funds by the universities is yet to be defined. This concern is even more germane, given the statement of the Chairman of the Committee (during the last meeting on Monday, August 19, 2013) that the committee is taking some documents to the Due Process Office.
“We hasten to add that while due process must be followed, it is the sole responsibility of benefiting universities to respect all the provisions of the Procurement Act. The meaning of your Committee going to the Due Process Office is that it is the one that will be responsible for awarding contracts.
“We want to make it clear that this will never be acceptable to our union. We believe that monies meant to fund projects in universities should be sent to the universities, just as it is the practice with TETFund.”
The union condemned allocation of construction of 2,500 bed space hostel for N1billion, instead of 3,000 bed space for N1.2 billion.
“We are worried that instead of allocating N1.2 billion each to construct 3,000 bed space hostels to the 10 Category 1 universities, N1.0 billion for 2,500 bed space hostel to the 16 Category 2 universities, N500 million to construct 1,250 bed space hostels in the 12 Category 3 universities and N250 million each to construct 625 bed space hostels in the 13 Category 4 universities, the secretariat has changed that to constructing 1,400 bed space hostels in 25 universities at the cost of N2 billion each. We see no rationale in this.
“Expending N50 billion to construct 35,000 bed space hostels across 25 universities will be ridiculously scandalous since the same amount can be used to construct 125,000 bed space hostels across 51 universities. The standard cost of building a bed space ranges from N200,000.00 to a maximum of N400,000.00.
“This is even more worrisome, given the tangential suggestions made by the chairman that only monies for refurbishment will be sent to universities, while the rest will be handled centrally,” the union said.
The union also condemned the exclusion of 22 universities from the allocation for refurbishment of laboratories and libraries and three universities from the allocation for refurbishment of lecture theatres and lecture rooms.
According to ASUU, 24 universities are denied allocation for construction of libraries and laboratories, while two are denied allocation for construction of new lecture theatres and lecture rooms. 26 universities are denied allocation for construction of hostel

Candidates who fall under this category are those who actually chose FUTO as either first and/or second choice in JAMB, scored 180 and above in the UTME, sat for the post UTME screening, and those must be students who were NOT caught in malpractice during the screening.

Possibly due to wrong shading of candidates' information, mistakes on the side of personnel handling the results at FUTO or some other possible causes.
Solution/how to get your result
1. Go to FUTO ICT center, near FUTO Micro Finance Bank.
2. Pay a little sum (About N300).
3. Write your detail as would be required of you and present to the ICT officials. E.g jamb reg no. Post utme application no, etc
4. They will "manually" search for your results using the result master list.
5. Confirm that result is yours, then request for a print out.

3 die, 4 injured, 18 others arrested at cult initiation

ILORIN — The combined team of Kwara State Police Command and Vigilance group in Ilorin, Saturday night, swooped on the hideout of Aiye Confraternity initiation which led to death of three, four critically injured while 18 were arrested.
The cultists from neighbouring states, who were returning from an initiation ceremony were mistaken for robbers by the security operatives.
The command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olufemi Fabode, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, confirmed the incident in Ilorin, yesterday.
Fabode explained that prior to the incident, the police had information that on Saturday night, robbers were hiding in abush behind NASFAT village along Airport Road, Ilorin preparatory to unleashing terror on the residents of the area.
He said: “This prompted various vigilance groups in the communities around the place to mount sentry on all roads that lead to the bush and waited until early hours of the morning when the Aiye Conferternity completed their initiation.
“Unaware that ambush had been laid for them, they ran into it. The vigilance groups mistook them for robbers and opened fire on them.”
The PPRO said during the exchange of gun fire, three of the cult members fell and were almost burnt before men of the command got there.
The police spokesman confirmed that three of the cultists died, four critically injured and 18 of them were arrested and are being interrogated by the men of the state CID.
He said some of the cultist came from as far as Lagos, Osun, Ibadan and Oro respectively, adding that more of them will be arrested
He said investigation still continues while those died have been taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital mortary , the injured taken to hospital and the rest 18 are cooling their feet with the CID.
He enjoined Kwarans “to always give useful information to the Police with a view to make the state crime free and warned parents to monitor their wards as some of those arrested disclosed that they were yet to gain admission to higher institution, neither their parents know their where about,saying if this could happen then they would graduate to become kingpin of the group,” he noted.
He however urged the members of various security agencies in the state to partner with the command in its untiring efforts to make kwara state a crisis free one
