UNIPORT Basic Studies/Pre-degree Programme Application for 2013/2014

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the Pre-degree Programme of the School of Basic Studies of the University of Port Harcourt for the 2013/2014 academic session.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should possess WASSC/SSCE/NECO/NABTEB Ordinary Level with credit passes in at least 5 relevant subjects. See Table on university website for further details.

COURSE DURATION
The Programme is for a period of one year (one academic session).

APPLICATION
Online application will commence from Monday, September 30, 2013; while the closing date for application is 12 midnight on Friday, November 15, 2013.

METHOD OF APPLICATION
Application is online. Log on to www.uniport.edu.ngand follow the instructions; a Fee of Ten Thousand Naira (N10,000.00),excluding Bank charges is required. Payment can be made at designated Banks nationwide. The names on candidates’ O’Level Certificates and JAMB Results must be the same as what is filled online.

SCREENING EXERCISE
The Screening Test will be Computer-Based and shall be conducted on Monday, November 25, 2013.

Venue: ICTC, University Park (Abuja Campus), University of Port Harcourt.

Materials Needed for the Screening Exercise
Candidates are required to come with the following and be at the venue by 8.00am.

1. A clear copy of Photocard printed online
2. Biro, HB pencil, eraser
3. Non – Programmable Calculator

ACCEPTANCE FEE
Candidates offered admission shall be required to pay a non-refundable Acceptance Fee of Ten Thousand Naira (N10,000)only which covers all textbooks and identity cards.

REGISTRATION
Registration of successful candidates will be announced in due course.

UNIPORT: NITT Donates Books To Political Science Dept

As part of its contribution towards encouraging reading habit among university students, the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), has donated a set of books to the Department of Political and Administrative Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences. The books were part of the collection authored by seasoned technocrat and philanthropist, Mallam Mohammed Jimada, who is Registrar of NITT.
Receiving members of the team, last Wednesday in his office, Acting Head of Department, Dr Eme Ekekwe,expressed gratitude to Author of the books for the kind gesture, promising to deploy them for proper use amongst staff and students.
“I wish it was possible for authors of important works, especially those that go beyond the daily struggles we all face and point us to higher values would make such works available to our staff and students for their personal enrichment, because as we train in character and learning, it is works such as these that can contribute to the building of such character—especially amongst the youth. We appreciate this exemplary gesture and we are very grateful to the Author for sending representatives for the donation. It is our hope that this kind gesture would also contribute to national integration,” the Acting HOD said.
Dr Ekekwe promised to makethe books available to members of staff and students as a way of encouraging them to read widely to know as much of the world around them as anessential part of their programme of personal enlightenment.
Leader of the team and Port Harcourt Liaison Officer of NITT, Mr Stanley Obiora, who stood in for the Author,said the donation which was a personal decision of the Registrar, Mallam Jimada, was aimed at encouraging the habit of motivating knowledgeable citizens to share their thoughts with society, especially students.
Mr Obiora said the NITT provides professional training in transportation and logistics, appealing to other like-minded bodies to also share their ideas and knowledge with people by documenting their experiences in book form. Disclosing plans to donate the books to other institutions, the Liaison Officer stated that UNIPORT is the first to benefit from such a donation, just as arrangements are a foot to establish an Office in Port Harcourt to coordinate the activities of the organization.
A check-list of books donated by Mallam Jimada included: A Trialogue On the Politico-Economic and Social Direction for Nigeria, The Inevitable and the Ultimate Purpose of Living as Humans and as Believers, The Answer to our History and Path to It, The Explanatory Note, The Path to Ummahood In Nigeria, TheComplete Proceedings of Our Constitution Drawing Committee, A Letter to Ghazzali Muhammad and To the Philosopher King and Princes.
In his remark, the Director, Centre for Logistics and Transportation Studies, Professor Osi Akpogomeh, commended the NITT for the kind donation, promising to partner the Institute when the Centre becomes fully operational in Port Harcourt.Other members of the delegation were Godson Onoh and Caminus Ugwu.

IAAF Approves High Performance Training Centre for Uniport

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) at the weekend recorded another milestone, securing the citing of a High Performance Training Centre at the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport).

President of AFN, Chief Solomon Ogba, who attended the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Centenary Gala Show in Barcelona, Spain, confirmed at the weekend that the formal agreement to seal the deal would be signed in January.

"At last, we have been able to secure approval for a High Performance Training Centre from IAAF to help our athletes develop their talents. This is a welcome development for us at the AFN," said Ogba on telephone from Barcelona at the weekend.

The other two centres in Africa currently are situated in Eldoret in Kenya and Dakar, Senegal. Almost all of Kenya's Olympic and World Champions (past and present) have trained at this elite centre of excellence in middle and long distance races.

When fully operational, the Uniport Centre will specialise in Nigeria's area of strength like sprints, quarter miles and jumps.

The highlight of the IAAF Centenary Gala was the announcement of Jamaica's World and Olympic champion, Usain Bolt and American Allyson Felix, as 2012 Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

Bolt, who won the award for the fourth time, and Felix, a first-time winner, received their trophies and $100,000 prize at the Athletes of the Year Awards ceremony in the Grand Ballroom of the Pullman Skipper Hotel.

Bolt, 26, the World Athlete of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2011, successfully defended both his 100m and 200m titles at the Olympic Games in London, clocking 9.63 and 19.32 respectively, both the fastest times in the World this year.

He concluded his Olympic appearance by anchoring a Jamaican quartet to a 36.84 world record in the 4x100m Relay. He won six out of seven competitions in the 100m, and three of four in the 200m.

Jamaica's Head Coach, Glen Mills was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Felix, 27, following World 200m titles in 2005, 2007 and 2009, won the Olympic 200m title in London and was part of the gold medal-winning 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams to become the first woman since 1988 to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games.

The victorious 4x100m Relay quartet in London clocked a 40.82 World record. Her 21.69 victory in the 200m at the U.S. Olympic Trials was the fastest in the world this year and made Felix the fourth fastest woman in history.
