Vice-Chancellor Appoints New Chief Security Officer

The Vice-Chancellor has approved the appointment of Mr Peter Ifeanyi Muo, a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police as the Chief Security Officer of the University with effect from September 1, 2013.

Mr Muo is expected to oversee the affairs of the University Security Unit and will report to the Vice-Chancellor on the security situation in the University and the environs.

In his reaction to the appointment, the new Chief Security Officer assured that he would re-position the Security Unit in line with the vision of the administration and the mantra “Quest for Excellence”. He promised to work assiduously in ensuring adequate protection of all staff/students as well as equipment/materials in the University.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor noted that Mr Muo was appointed as the CSO based on his outstanding wealth of experience, exemplary leadership skills and administrative acumen as an intelligence crime officer who distinguished himself in the Police Force. He noted that the mandate of the new CSO is to protect the lives and property of the University in addition to ensuring that illegal encroachment on the University land is prevented.

ASUU strike: Thereis no need for the lecturers to continue – President Jonathan

ABUJA-President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said there was no need for the Academic Staff Union of Universities to continue with their industrial action.
Mr. Jonathan said this at the inauguration of the Federal Government sponsored-Transformation Projects at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).
Represented by Ruqayyat Rufai, the Minister of Education, the president said N30 billion had been released for the payment of earned allowances in all public universities.
The president said that the inaugurated projects were in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to providing quality education in the country. He said the projects were based on the need assessment exercise conducted by the Federal Government in universities.
University lecturers have been on a nationwide strike for over 8 weeks with the lecturers demanding a full implementation of a 2009 agreement it had with the federal government. While the government says it has provided N30 billion for earned allowances of lecturers, the lecturers said about N92 billion is required to completely offset the earned allowances of the concerned lecturers. That and other demands are the reasons the lecturers have continued with their strike.
Mr. Jonathan also urged the FUTO administration to engage in research for national development, while stressing the need for proper maintenance of completed projects.
The Vice Chancellor of FUTO, Chidozie Asiabaka, in his speech, expressed joy at the completion of the structure.
Mr. Asiabaka noted that the projects had gone a long way in tackling the dearth of basic infrastructure in the school.
“The dearth of classrooms, lecture theatres, power supply, student hostels, office accommodation, library space and facilities are major challenges my administration faced when I assumed office two years-ago,’’ he said.
The vice chancellor said with the intervention of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, the university got 1000 sitting-capacity lecture theatre, Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies Building.
He said the inaugurated projects are the new Engineering Technology, School of Environmental Technology Building, Centre for Nuclear Energy Studies and Training and the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology building complexes.
The others are the School of Environmental Technology building, landscaping of the campus and the provision of solar energy lights on the campus.
He also commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on the completion of the giant student hostel building in the university.
He lauded the Federal Government for the release of N1 billion for the development of capital projects in each public funded university.

Solution to pending FUTO 2013/2014 Post UTME Results

FUTO---Several students reportedly are yet to see their performances Weeks after the release of their 2013/2014 post UTME results by the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), which can be accessed here using your jamb, confirmation no or application no.
Although FUTO is yet to officially make a press statement confirming the unavailability of results for some candidates online, futocommunity have been able to seek for a way around this problem.
Candidates who fall under this category are those who actually chose FUTO as either first and/or second choice in JAMB, scored 180 and above in the UTME, sat for the post UTME screening, and those must be students who were NOT caught in malpractice during the screening.
The problem
Possibly due to wrong shading of candidates' information, mistakes on the side of personnel handling the results at FUTO or some other possible causes.
Solution/how to get your result
1. Go to FUTO ICT center, near FUTO Micro Finance Bank.
2. Pay a little sum (About N300).
3. Write your detail as would be required of you and present to the ICT officials. E.g jamb reg no. Post utme application no, etc
4. They will "manually" search for your results using the result master list.
5. Confirm that result is yours, then request for a print out.

FUTO ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

STRUCTURE:

• Programmes of courses shall be provided in each school leading to Bachelor Degree


• Instruction shall be by courses evaluated in terms of course units. A course unit is defined as a series of about fifteen one-hours lecture or series of about forty-five hours of laboratory work, or any equivalent work load, offered over one semester of 15 weeks. The following terms shall apply in evaluation:

1.  Grade Point (GP) – the Grade Point derives from the actual percentage, raw score for a given course; the raw score is converted into letter grade (A to F) and a grade point (5 to 0).


2. Total Grade Point (TGP) - this derives from multiplying the grade point by the unit per course.


3. Total Number of Unit (TNU)- this is obtained by adding up all the units taken by the student in the semester


4. Grade-Point Average (GPA)- Performance in any semester is reported in Grade Point Average. The GPA is obtained by multiplying the GP attained in each courses by the number of Unit assigned to that course and then summing these up and dividing by the total number of units taken for the semester.


5. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)-  this is the up-to-date mean of the Grade Point earned  by the student in a programme of study. It is an indication of the students overall performance at any point in training programme. To compute the CGPA, total GP  multiplied by the trespective Course Unit for all the semesters are added and then divided by the total number of unit  for all courses registered by the student.

2013/2014 Admission ends Oct 31st -JAMB

JAMB 2013

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has announced that admission into Nigerian universities for 2013/2014 session will end on October 31st.
The JAMB Registrar, Mr. Dibu Ojerinde who stated this at the 1st Technical Committee Meeting on 2013/2014 Admissions to Most Preferred Degree Awarding Institutions in Uyo on Tuesday, also called on admission officers in the universities to adhere strictly to the Federal Government guidelines.
During the meeting which was organised for university admission officers across the country, Ojerinde said that the admission officers should be transparent in whatever actions and decisions they make during the admission process.
“You are reminded to strictly follow the guidelines as outlined by the proprietors of your institutions and the (60:40) Science/Arts ratio for universities and other degree awarding institutions.
“The Federal Government’s approved criteria of merit (is) 45 per cent; catchments 35 per cent and educationally-less developed states, 20 per cent.
All stakeholders are to ensure strict compliance to these criteria as the Federal Government is desirous of giving all Nigerians equal opportunity to mix and educate freely in every partof the country,” he said.
He further stated that JAMB expected that the quota for each course and the criteria used for admitting the candidates should be on the right print-outs issued to them by the board.
Despite the ongoing strike by university lecturers, ASUU, which is in its seventh week, many universities have continued their admission process and conducted the post-UTME examination with the lecturers threatening to invalidate the exercise

In his remarks, the Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Education, Atim Antai, who declared the meeting open, said that education was an agent for sustainable development and should not be left to chance
Mr. Atim emphasised that education policies should be deliberately planned and rationally executed for good results.
She said that the state government gave prompt attention to complaints and reports concerning education with a view to reducing possible adverse consequences on the academic performance of students.
The commissioner called on JAMB to carry out intensive sensitisation and enlightenment of the public and students on the computer-based testing.
“Let me reiterate the determination of my ministry to cooperate with JAMB in the task of conducting a credible UTME in Akwa Ibom.
“The ministry has already putin place an Examination Watch Group to monitor all examinations conducted by the board and other examining bodies with a view to making such examinations credible and examination ethics-compliant,” she said.

FUTO Post UTME Result is out for 2013/2014, checking instructions here

This is to inform all 2013/2014 post UTME candidates of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO that the result of the post UTME screening have started trickling-in.

The Department of Information Management Technology (IMT) was approved by Senate, the highest academic governing body in the university, in March 2004, and had the first student enrollment in the academic session 2004/2005. Now approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC), following the resource visitation of December, 2007, the department has about 400 students. The programme option available in the department for now is Information Technology.

About The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO)

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri FUTO. Was established in Nigerian as one of the three federal University of Technology in Nigeria that were to be established in 1980 under the leadership of President shehu shagari.

The Federal University of Technology Owerri FUTO was one of the university set up for each geo political zones, in order to increase skills, innovations and technologically oriented manpower for the technology based of Nigerian national economy. FUTO made landmark as Nigeria’s first University of Technology, retaining its identity when, in 1984, the Buhari government merged the Federal University of Technology Bauchi with Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and federal University of Markudi, with the University of Jos.  First Vice chancellor Prof Umaru. D. Gomwalk. Full Academic programmes began in October 1981/82 with a total number of 255, comprising 202 males and 23 females students, all enrolled in the ‘school of Natural and Applied science’ now called ‘school of science’( SOSC). SINCE 1988.

Currently the Academic structure of the University Consist of Six schools and a total of about 45 departments. The University runs four programmes which includes

Futo Academic Score

1.  Grade Point (GP) – the Grade Point derives from the actual percentage, raw score for a given course; the raw score is converted into letter grade (A to F) and a grade point (5 to 0).


2. Total Grade Point (TGP) – this derives from multiplying the grade point by the unit per course.


3. Total Number of Unit (TNU)- this is obtained by adding up all the units taken by the student in the semester


4. Grade-Point Average (GPA)- Performance in any semester is reported in Grade Point Average. The GPA is obtained by multiplying the GP attained in each courses by the number of Unit assigned to that course and then summing these up and dividing by the total number of units taken for the semester.


5. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)-  this is the up-to-date mean of the Grade Point earned  by the student in a programme of study. It is an indication of the students overall performance at any point in training programme. To compute the CGPA, total GP  multiplied by the trespective Course Unit for all the semesters are added and then divided by the total number of unit  for all courses registered by the student.

FUTO ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

STRUCTURE:

• Programmes of courses are provided in each school leading to Bachelor Degree


• Instruction shall be by courses evaluated in terms of course units. A course unit is defined as a series of about fifteen one-hours lecture or series of about forty-five hours of laboratory work, or any equivalent work load, offered over one semester of 15 weeks. The following terms shall apply in evaluation:
