The Federal University of Technology, Owerri, (FUTO) has been listed
as an important hub for the control of tropical disease in Africa. In
an interactive session with the University Management on Thursday,
June 27, 2013, the Executive Director, African Network for Drugs and
Diagnostics Innovation (ANDI), an arm of the World Health Organisation
(WHO), Dr S. Nwaka stated that ANDI was partnering with some South
Korean Universities/Institutions to initiate an African-Korean
partnership on health and pharmaceutical innovation for diseases that
affect the African continent. He noted that FUTO has been selected as
an important hub for the partnership due to its high quality manpower.
In his remarks at the interaction, the Director, Centre for Science
and Technology PolicyInstitute, South Korea, Dr Jeong Lee explained
that the collaboration would involve specialised institutions such as
FUTO working with scientists that have innovative ideas in tackling
health challenges.
In his response, the Vice-Chancellor represented by the Deputy
Vice-Chancellor (Academic) assured the delegation that the University
has adequate human and material resources to actualise the
collaboration. He added that the University has just completed a
building for the Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies (CES) which would
be essential for the collaboration.
Accompanying the Vice-Chancellor were the Director, Centre for
Research and International Development (CRID), Prof F Anunobi; Head of
Department of Public Health Technology, Prof A. N. Amadi and the
Deputy Director, Linkages and Advancement Unit, Dr (Mrs) H. Obikaonu.
After the interaction, the delegation later toured the University and
interacted with other faculty members of the University.
