Students campaign against breast cancer

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter of the Pharmaceutical Association of Nigerian Students (PANS) and Seplat Petroleum Development Company Limited have organised a rally to promote breast cancer awareness among Nigerians, with view to checking the spread of the disease.
The campaign, which is sponsored by Seplat Petroleum, was part of the activities designed to commemorate the 2012 annual health week of the association. The theme of the week was Global trend in Pharmaceutical practice: Nigeria’s position.x
Led by their president, Ishaq Alao, the students rallied against breast cancer in Mushin, Surulere and Akoka areas of Lagos, with special focus on Mushin model Market, Randle General Hospital, Surulere Local Government and the UNILAG campus. They educated the public, especially the women on the danger of breast cancer.
General Manager, Corporate Affairs and New Business Development, Seplat Petroleum Development Company Limited, Dr Chioma Nwachuku, said the programme was consistent with the vision of the company’s Corporate Social Responsility (CSR).
According to the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, ignorance and lack of support are the most common factors contributing to the prevalence of the disease in the country. Breast cancer constitutes a major public health issue globally with over one million new cases diagnosed annually, resulting in over 400,000 annual deaths and about 4.4 million women living with the disease.

Mobil to partner Bonny on education

Mobile Producing Nigeria (MPN) has promised to partner with Bonny Kingdom Development Committee (BKDC) to provide infrastructure for education to thrive in Bonny Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State.
The General Manager, Public and Government Affairs of MPN, Mrs Gloria Essien-Danner, said this during the third edition of the Senior Secondary Schools Quiz Competition in Bonny, organised by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)/MPN Joint Venture in collaboration with BKDC.
Essien-Danner explained that the exercise was part of the company's community relations programmes "to uplift the falling standards of education, rekindle interest and consciousness in education and encourage reading habits among pupils."
The Chairman of  the occasion, Dr Sodienye Jackmay, said the quiz competition was to restore reading habit in pupils. Jackmay advised pupils to desist from spending precious time on things that would not make any meaningful impact on their future.
The Chairman of Bonny LGA, Edward Pepple, who was represented by Mr Samuel John, commended NNPC/MPN and the BKDC for their efforts which culminated to the quiz competition that has 'undoubtedly improved pupils' performances.'
The Chairman of Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board, Mr Allwell Nyeso, who was represented by a member of the board in charge of Science and Technology, Mr Tonye Longjohn, decried the falling standards of education, which he said has become worrisome to government.
Nyeso, who commended the sponsors and facilitators of the event, also expressed hope that it would stimulate spirit of competition amongst participants, and impacting positively on their overall academic activities.
Earlier in his address, Dr Jude Benstowe, who represented Recreasport, the facilitator of the competition, said the organisation has procured more current textbooks for all participating schools to improve and update their libraries, high speed lap-top computers and other prizes which would be given to the winners at the event for their personal use.
At the end of the competition, which featured four public and four private schools in the LGA, Spring Foundation College came tops to retain the first position, which it won in the last edition. It scored 28 points to defeat Community Secondary School which got 27 points. Bonny National Grammar School also secured 28 points to beat Kings and Queens High School which had 19 points.

JAMB to Introduce Computer Based Test (CBT) from next Year

information emerging from the registrar of the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Dibu Ojerinde, has revealed that, starting from nest year, prospective undergraduates will be undergoing electronic testing as against the old paper-based test. This, he explained, will help check the rising cases of examination malpractices in the country, and it will also make it possible for candidates to get their results immediately.
The registrar made this disclosure while paying a courtesy visit to Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State. According to him, “the e-testing if finally introduced will check the cases of malpractices by JAMB candidates which has become a source of worry for all stakeholders… When introduced, the e-testing technology would also ensure that our candidates instantly receive the result of their examination at their centres at the end of the examination” the registrar said.
Other justifications put forward for the introduction of this approach to the test include the encouragement of computer literacy, adding that students could also use cell phones for the examination. However, the registrar pointed out that even though this will be introduced next year, it will not be made compulsory for all the candidates yet.
He concludes: “We did a survey and about 76 percent respondents approved e-testing so starting from next year we will commence putting it to practice but not until three years time that we will fully implement it, so whoever prefer manual next year and in two years time will be allowed.”

OKONJO IWEALA LAMENTS STATE OF EDUCATION

Minister of Finance and Co-ordinating Minister
for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has
raised the alarm over the deteriorating state of
education.
The development, she said, has reached a point
where students on graduation, could not
demonstrate the necessary skills to make them
employable or innovative in the labour market.
Mrs Okonjo-Iweala spoke at a lecture entitled:
Science and technology: The key to Nigeria's
transformation, which was part of the Second
Prof Barth Nnaji Biennial Lecture series, at the
Enugu State University of Science and Technology
(ESUT), Enugu.
She said there was need to put in place
mechanisms to improve the quality and facilities
available for teaching as well as for research at
the tertiary level.
"These measures are not limited to simply
increasing funds available; collaboration
between higher institutions (national and
international), a more limited focus in research
programmes offered, and an improvement in the
culture of maintenance are all measures that will
help deliver this end.
"In the case of university research, findings
should be competition-based, to provide
incentives to enhance efficiency and strengthen
collaboration with industry."
Mrs Okonjo-Iweala further lamented that the
nation's higher institutions were plagued with
inadequate science and technology facilities and
poor materials for practical skills development.
"Many laboratories lack the basic equipment for
thorough scientific research. How, for example,
can a computer science graduate not understand
the basics of writing software codes? Nigeria is
churning out thousands of science and
technology graduates each year, but several of
them are under-employed, going into the banking
and non-scientific sectors," she said.
She noted that policy makers should be aware
that few countries could achieve development
goals, such as economic diversification, food
security, poverty reduction, without the
scientific , engineering and technical capacity to
handle 'the challenges.

Fed Govt launches empowerment scheme for corps members

The Special Adviser to the President on Special
Duties and Social Development Matters Sarah
Pane has launched a Discovery Empowerment
programme for members of the National Youth
Service Corps (NYSC).
The initiative was launched in collaboration with
the Discovery Cycle professionals to empower
youths against challenges facing workers.
She said since the inception of the NYSC in 1973,
over two million members have been trained
with over 100, 000 corps members passing
through the scheme yearly.
"Today," Pane said, "the scheme faces several
overwhelming problems, which include poor
quality of tertiary education graduates; and as a
result, the Discovery Empowerment Programme
was introduced to increase the intellectual
process and the capacity building of our future
leaders."
She said since the inception the scheme has
failed to transform to produce youths who would
be employable, noting that it is aimed at giving
training to corp members.
She said the training would involve
professionals, who would educate them on what
they want to do after their service either to
further their education abroad or applying for
jobs in a corporate body.
She thanked the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
administration for its support for paying the fees
of some of the students. She urged other
corporate and professional bodies to take a cue
from it..
She said the body targets 3,000 corp members in
the FCT and at least 1000 corp members in every
state for training.

UI to start Diploma in Automotive studies

The Distance Learning Centre, Mechanical
Engineering Department, University of Ibadan
(UI) and Mag Ben Technology are to kick-off a
diploma programme in automotive studies.
Its Director, Distance Learning Centre, Prof Bayo
Okunade, said this during its matriculation.
He said: “Early next year, we want to start a
diploma course in automotive studies. We
started with 32 students; now we have 262
because of the evidences from the past
participants and we are hoping that the fifth
batch will be larger."
Okunade, who said the programme was
introduced to produce competent workmen,
added that only competent students stand a
chance of gaining admission.
"This programme has received good turnout
since its inception because we make sure they
(graduands) are competent. At the end of their
programme, our students are not given
certificate of participation, but of competence.
After this batch, we are going to a higher level;
those of them who have prerequisite can go for
diploma.
"In this country we lack competent work men
who would give value for money. So, we thought
we should retrain our mechanics, carpenters,
bricklayers instead of having to import
equipment. We want people, who can execute
the project and at the same time give customers
value for money. This is fourth batch and there
will be another one before the end of this year.
The lectures are received at different locations of
the country while practical are done at various
workshops. They are taught in formal ways,"
The Managing Director, Mag Ben Limited, Mr
Gbenga Agbana, said the programme has helped
to reduce unemployment and enhanced self-
reliance for graduands. He reiterated the
commitment of the group to ensure that quacks
in the auto business are educated.
He said: "We have 10 centres; yet there are
hundreds of Nigerians still patronising quacks.
People and organisations can afford to spend
millions on their vehicles; but who are the people
handling these vehicles for them? Quacks! So, we
saw that the only thing we could do is to train
most of these people in auto technics and to
make sure they are capable of handling the
machines.
UI Deputy Registrar, DLC, Mr Kehinde Oladiji,
congratulated the matriculants for making use of
the opportunity extended to them by the
institution. Two of the matriculants Messrs
Michael James and Ganiyu Oladimeji, expressed
confidence that the training would move them up
the next level.
"My friends who came for this programme never
remained the same. So, I also wanted to move to
higher level," James said.
Oladimeji, another student who joined the
automobile profession in 1994, said he enrolled
for the programme in order to be conversant
with latest vehicles.

Ooni calls for emergencyin education

Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, has called for
a state of emergency in the education sector.
He spoke at the awards of St. John's Grammar
School, Oke-Atan, Ile-Ife, Osun State as part of the
school’s golden jubilee.
The monarch, who was represented by Atilade
of Fashina Ife, Oba Oladoyin Ogunwusi, blamed
the spate of violence in the country on the
collapse of the school system resulting in the high
rate of illiteracy, said he would rather all
stakeholders declare emergency in the country's
education sector.
At the event, a law maker, who represents Osun
East Senatorial District, Senator Babajide
Omoworare and three others were honoured by
the school.
The gesture, which formed part of the school's
Golden Jubilee was in appreciation of the quartet
for their contributions to the uplift of the
academic and infrastructural development of
their alma mater, according to the management.
The school, founded in 1962 by the late Rev.
Father Fabian Cloutier, a French Canadian
Catholic Missionary, was said to have contributed
immensely to the upbringing of many men and
women in Ile-Ife community and the
neighbouring villages. As a result, the school's
old students' association has remained
committed to reviving its old glory.
Senator Omoworare, Dele Alabi, an engineer and
the association's President, Chief Sunday Bolaji,
were conferred with the award of excellence.
Omoworare, who passed out from the school in
1984, recently renovated the administrative
block, which houses the staff room, school hall,
and sports store, among others. He equipped the
offices with furniture and supplied a borehole to
ameliorate the water scarcity that had one of the
school's albatross for years.
The lawmaker said reforming the school system
is a business for stakeholders, including parents,
guardians and philanthropists, as, adding
government alone cannot resolve all the
challenges.
"Like every other parts of the world, education is
too important to be left in the hands of
government alone for control. There is need for
us all to rise up to the occasion and bail out these
schools from their terrible status. When we have
a well-educated society, we can begin to talk
about crisis-resolution, job creation, war against
corruption and better governance," he said.
He canvassed support for education, assuring of
the state of good works and dividends of
democracy, especially quality of education for
youths. He reminded the gathering of the
education tablet Opon Imo, which is the recent
innovation from the Governor Rauf Aregbesola-
led administration to develop model schools that
would make learning and teaching attractive to
the students and their teachers.
Presenting the award plaque, the Atilade of
Fashina Ife, Oba Ogunwusi, thanked the
recipients.
The Principal of the school, Mr Femi Makinde,
also an alumnus, praised his colleagues for their
support, encouraging others to return to their
former schools and replicate same.
"With this gesture, we must understand that
alumni associations for schools are too
important to be neglected. We must also note
that it is not until we become senators or
governors that we can give back to our school. It
does not have to be in cash at all times, even if we
can just be visiting for inspection and we report
whatever we find to other old students who
might not have time to visit, we might just be
doing a great job. Without education, the crises
facing Nigeria cannot be resolved and the best
way to return the education sector to the old
glorious days is for us all to take the bull by the
horns," Makinde said.

18 NYSC members died on way to camp – Youth Minister

Eighteen intending members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were last Tuesday killed in a road accident while travelling from Imo to Taraba state for their orientation exercise, the Minister of Youth Development, Bolaji Abdullahi said on Monday. The minister said this during the flag off of the 2012 NYSC Batch A skills acquisition sensitization training programme in Abuja. He said that the issue of resuming within twenty four hours after issuance of call up letters would no longer be the case. The minister therefore sought for the review of the camp resumption deadline. “We will look into the review of the resumption time so that those to be mobilise will prepare and resume to the camp before closing of the camp without having to rush to meet up with the deadline. The exercise will start right from when final result of those to be mobilise is released from their various institutions,” Mr Abdullahi said. He said that the federal government starting from the 2012 Batch A corps members, will start an agro business grant to support and train graduating corps members going into agriculture business. “Federal government in collaboration with T.Y Danjuma foundation will be giving grant of between two to three million naira to corps members for agro business with the condition that the corper must go through a 14 days training programme and it must be in connection with another four to five corps members.” The minister further reiterated the scheme’s plan to shut out oil companies, banks and National Assembly from posting corps members to serve there as well as stopping of preferential posting. “As I earlier disclosed during the unveiling of the new NYSC policy, our corps members will only be posted to areas like agriculture, education, rural health and infrastructure in order to achieve some of the MDGs while corpers will only be posted preferentially based legitimately on marital, medical and disability ground, adding that anyone found wanting or lying about those grounds would be punished appropriately,” he said.

National University Commission Accredit 30 National Open University Programmes

National University Commission Accredit 30 National Open University Programmes

National Universities Commission has accredited 30 programmes being offered by the National Open University of Nigeria. Acting Director, Open and Distance Education of the NUC, Dr. Suleiman Ramon-Yusuf, said this at the end of a one-day advocacy forum on the Open and Distance Learning in the Nigerian University System in Abuja on Tuesday. Ramon-Yusuf, however, explained that the status of the accreditation of each of the programmes was still being processed.
He said apart from NOUN, the University of Ibadan; Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Abuja; University of Maiduguri, Federal University of Technology, Yola and University of Lagos run ODL programmes. Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, cautioned the Senate and council of universities against the abuse of part-time and sandwich programmes. Okogie said NUC would not take kindly to institutions ignoring rules and procedures for running such programmes.
He said the commission had developed a framework to ensure standards and quality of the products of the ODL as it is obtainable in the conventional university education. Vice-Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Vincent Ado-Tenebe, said the Open and Distance Learning of Education was “the in-thing all over the world” because of the flexibility of the programme.
He said, “It is the only thing that can salvage the world’s population, because the traditional system of education where you have the classrooms can no longer contain, especially in countries like Nigeria, where the population growth is high”. He, however, said it was unfortunate that many Nigerians were yet to appreciate the window of opportunity for university education provided by ODL. –

Court restates ban on UNILAG name change

Court restates ban on UNILAG name change

Students of University of Lagos in a hijacked LAGBUS bus, during a protest against the renaming of the institution in Lagos... on Wednesday.
A Federal High Court, Ikeja on Wednesday reaffirmed its earlier interim order restraining the Federal Government and other concerned authorities from changing the name of University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University.
Justice Stephen Adah reiterated that the order would subsist throughout the period of hearing and final determination of the suit challenging the propriety of renaming the university through a broadcast by President Goodluck Jonathan on May 29, 2012.
This came even as the court also ordered the consolidation of the two suits filed separately by the alumni association and some students of the university.
Adah restated the interim order following a request by the plaintiffs’ lead counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, for an extension of the validity of the order.
Counsel for the respondents in the suit, in their separate responses to Olanipekun’s application, said the judge in his ruling on June 25, 2012, had made it clear that the injunction was to be alive until when the suit was finally dispensed off.
The respondents are the University of Lagos, the Senate of the university, its Governing Council, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke (SAN); and the National Assembly.
Prof. Taiwo Osipitan (SAN), represented UNILAG and its Senate, Mrs. Titilola Akinlawon (SAN), the university’s Senate; Mrs. H.E Obayagbon, the National Assembly; and Mr. J.J Usman, the Attorney-General of the Federation. They all consented to the continued validity of the order.
The judge, in a short ruling said the order would “subsist throughout the hearing and final determination of the suit.”
Following an oral application by Olanipekun, the judge also ordered the consolidation of the two suits marked, FHC/IKJ/CS/130/2012 and FHC/IKJ/CS/131/2012.
All the respondents’ counsel agreed that since the two suits had the same facts, there was the need to consolidate them.
In his application for extension of the order, Olanipekun had said the status quo which the court said must be maintained in its June 25 ruling was the name which the university had been bearing for the past 50 years.
The National President of the Alumni Association of the university, Prof. Olayide Abass and the Secretary, Femi Olatunji, on behalf of the association, instituted the suit seeking nine reliefs as the ones sought by the students.
The judge adjourned till September 21 and directied the parties to file all necessary court processes before then.
The plaintiffs, whose case is being prosecuted by at least 14 SANs, are asking the court to declare that President’s action is null and void.
Among other orders being sought by the plaintiffs is one restraining the university and its Council from complying with the President’s broadcast.

NUC suspends licences of Lead City, six varsities

The National Universities Commission has suspended the operational licences of seven private universities for allegedly violating its guidelines in physical facilities and academic programmes.
The affected universities are Lead City, Caritas, Joseph Ayo Babalola, Tansian, Madonna, Achievers and Obong.
The Director of Press and Public Relations of NUC, Mallam Ibrahim Yakassai, confirmed this in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents on Wednesday night.
A top source, who pleaded anonymity, said the decision to suspend the operational licences of the affected universities was due to their non-compliance with the regulations guiding the operations of universities in the country as stipulated by the NUC.
“The operators of the universities affected know their offences because so many times, we have informed them about their failings but they did not take necessary steps to address their shortcomings. Anyway, It’s just a suspension and it will be lifted as soon as they do the correct things,” the sourced said.

Boko Haram:NYSC stops posting of 14,850 graduates to North

Boko Haram:NYSC stops posting of 14,850 graduates to North

Batch ‘B’ corps members in a tug of war during their swearing-in, in Abuja... on Wednesday
At last, the National Youth Service Corps has bowed to pressure and rescinded the decision to post 14,850 corps members to troubled northern states.
It has directed the affected corps members to report at the NYSC headquarters for redeployment to states considered safe.
A statement by the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.-General Nnamdi Okore-Affia, in Abuja on Wednesday, directed corps members posted to Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Kano and Kaduna states to immediately report to the NYSC headquarters for redeployment.
This came barely 24 hours after an earlier insistence by the NYSC that corps members posted to the affected areas must first report to camp before requests for redeployment could be considered.
Okore-Affia has also directed all those deployed in Yobe and Borno states to report to new orientation camps in Nasarawa and Benue states respectively.
The statement reads, “This is to inform all prospective corps members deployed to Yobe and Borno states for the 2012 Batch ‘B’ Orientation Course to note the following:
“Yobe State prospective corps members will now hold their orientation course at the Nasarawa State NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Keffi, Keffi LGA, and not as stated on their call-up letters.
“Borno State prospective corps members will undertake their orientation programme at the Benue State NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp at Wanume, Tarka LGA, and not as stated on their call-up letters.
“Date: Thursday 26th July-Thursday 16th August, 2012, as earlier published.
“In addition, all 2012 Batch ‘B’ prospective corps members deployed to Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Kano and Kaduna states who have collected their call-up letters but are yet to report in camp should immediately report at the NYSC Directorate Headquarters, Abuja for redeployment.”
The statement is silent on the fate of those who have already reported in camp in compliance with the earlier directive.
However, a senior official of the corps confided in our correspondent that those who had complied would not be discriminated against.
“Requests by those who responded to the earlier directive to report will be given expeditious consideration because we must not send the wrong signals to those who are law-abiding,” the official who asked not to be named said.
A female youth corps member who reported in the Plateau State camp confirmed to our correspondent on the telephone that they were given re-deployment request forms yesterday.
Fourteen thousand corps members were posted to troubled northern states.
Data obtained by The Punch revealed that 1,050 corps members were posted to Borno State, the same number was posted to Yobe State while Gombe, Kano, and Kaduna states had 2,500 corps members each. Bauchi had 1,500 while 2,300 corps members were posted to Plateau State.

Reps want NYSC to cancel posting to ‘volatile’ states

Ripples over posting to troubled states

National Youth Service Corps members
MAUREEN AZUH writes on the dilemma facing potential members of the National Youth Service Corps who have been posted to states where violence is rampant
When the National Youth Service Corps was established in 1973, it was with the aim to “reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil war” as well as encourage and develop common ties among Nigerian youths.
Unfortunately, some developments outside and within the NYSC ‘camp’ in recent times have called to question the continued relevance of the spirit behind the scheme. At the national level, some events have threatened the values that enhance togetherness, patriotism and outright sacrifice that many would want to undertake for their fatherland. That is why some people have queried the continued relevance or necessity of the NYSC.
In this era when some states in the Northern Nigeria and even the Federal capital, Abuja, seem to be at the mercy of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, it seems very obvious that the leadership of the scheme would hesitate before posting innocent and harmless youths to the troubled spots. Surprise, however, came when the NYSC, as usual, sent fresh graduates from different higher institutions to all states, including Borno and Yobe, where the activities of the sect have left many people dead in recent months.
It is however not surprising that, early in the week, those posted to Yobe, Kaduna, Kano, Sokoto, Bornu and Bauchi states besieged NYSC national secretariat, Abuja for redeployment.
Most of the corps members, who belong to the Batch B of the 2012 service year, in interviews with national dailies, expressed sadness and fear. On social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and even Blackberry, corps members have continued to express their displeasure at the development.
One noted, “This government is wicked and heartless. This government is a devil. Why are corps members posted to these states this time around?” Another posted, “No sane person would willingly walk into death. You either choose your life or a certificate that does not guaranty a job after service. It’s that simple.”
Although Boko Haram has not made any pronouncement against corps members, nor has it forbidden their going to serve in the affected states, the fear is hinged on the fact that the sect seems to have an issue with the Federal Government, and, as it is said, ‘corpers are government’s children’. Besides, youth corps members are symbols of western education that Boko Haram believes is evil. Even when no one directly targets the ‘corpers’, everybody is a potential victim whenever violence erupts. It is thus natural that the candidates posted to the affected states and their parents would protest.
But the NYSC authorities do not want to shift grounds. While the protests have been ongoing, a statement signed by the Director of Corps Mobilisation, Mrs Mary Kolajo, was allegedly pasted at the NYSC Headquarters in Abuja, urging whosoever wanted a reposting to do so while in camp in whatever state he has been sent to. The fact is that the corps’ officials have remained adamant with reports that they are already collaborating with the affected states on how to ensure security for the corps members posted to their states. The argument is that no participant can be redeployed until he or she reports to the orientation camp for registration.
To an average Nigerian, the fears of corps members may not be unfounded. Corps members had in the past faced one form of attack or the other in different states during service. But the morbid fear to serve in northern states began in 2011 when several ‘corpers’ were killed and others injured in the violence which followed the presidential elections in Bauchi and some other northern states.
Similarly, a graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Eucharia Remmy, was allegedly attacked and killed in Damaturu, during a bombing explosion that shook the state in late 2011. Also in 2009, a female corps member, Miss Grace Ushang, was raped to death in Maiduguri by assailants who are still at large. In the face of the seeming logjam, the NYSC appears to be the alpha and omega. Do the affected corps members have any right to say ‘No’?
For human rights lawyer, Fred Agbaje, they have every right to reject postings to the said states.
“Why would they not refuse to go there for their service?” he asked. “Who wants to go and die? It is a constitutional responsibility of the government at all tiers to ensure the welfare and security of its citizens. If the government cannot perform the social contract, that is security, then the citizens are free to reject any order given to them by the governemnt. It takes two to tango, so NYSC should stop being authoritarian because those who died last year are yet to be compensated.”
On May 31, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig.-Gen. Nnamdi Okore-Afia, said in Abuja that female corps members prone to molestation should be trained in self defence. Rather than celebrate the decision, many corps members had, again, taken to networking sites to express their dissatisfaction at the development.
“Martial arts my foot! Same D.G that has exclusively reserved Lagos and Abuja for VIPs and oversea graduates, expecting us with no surnames to go and serve the fatherland with knowledge of taekwando, judo and karate,” a youth corps members had posted on an interactive site, Nairaland.
Another posted thus, “I just hope these so-called training programme includes explosion survival tactics and that they w’ll issue out AK47 to the northern serving corpers. Or better still, get everyone injected with kryptonite or something that’ll turn us all into superman/wonder woman as the case may be.”
Of course, not a few Nigerians would share the fear of the corps members, especially as whatever decision taken would affect, in one way or the other, many families.
Agbaje’s position is that affected parents can take a legal action against any decision to take their wards to states where their safety is not guaranteed.
He said, “There might not be an act under NYSC that provides a legal standing for parents but parents can state that the provision for their wards to face death penalty without trial or due process in some parts of the country is an affront on their human right and should be rejected. Afterall, section 17 of the Nigerian constitution provides for freedom, equality and justice for all citizens.”
Civil rights lawyer, Mr. Bamidele Aturu, reinforces Agbaje’s stance. He is of the opinion that security agencies and government have failed the citizens.
“Section 16 and 17 of the Nigerian Constitution makes it clear that security of Nigerians should be the primary concern of government. But the government has failed the citizens. It has shown that it is not on top of security issues in the country. So this can be the reason for parents to take legal action against NYSC: that it is jeopardising the lives of their wards. Whether they succeed or not is another matter but nobody wants to lose a child,” he said.
Perhaps succour is on the way for the ‘corpers’ as the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, barred the NYSC from posting corps members to volatile states in Northern Nigeria.
The House, which issued the order in a resolution, however, added a proviso that those corps members who wish to serve in such states should be allowed to do so – including their indigenes.
The states are Borno, Yobe, Kano, Bauchi, Kaduna, Plateau and Adamawa.
