ASUU strike: Thereis no need for the lecturers to continue – President Jonathan

ABUJA-President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said there was no need for the Academic Staff Union of Universities to continue with their industrial action.
Mr. Jonathan said this at the inauguration of the Federal Government sponsored-Transformation Projects at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).
Represented by Ruqayyat Rufai, the Minister of Education, the president said N30 billion had been released for the payment of earned allowances in all public universities.
The president said that the inaugurated projects were in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to providing quality education in the country. He said the projects were based on the need assessment exercise conducted by the Federal Government in universities.
University lecturers have been on a nationwide strike for over 8 weeks with the lecturers demanding a full implementation of a 2009 agreement it had with the federal government. While the government says it has provided N30 billion for earned allowances of lecturers, the lecturers said about N92 billion is required to completely offset the earned allowances of the concerned lecturers. That and other demands are the reasons the lecturers have continued with their strike.
Mr. Jonathan also urged the FUTO administration to engage in research for national development, while stressing the need for proper maintenance of completed projects.
The Vice Chancellor of FUTO, Chidozie Asiabaka, in his speech, expressed joy at the completion of the structure.
Mr. Asiabaka noted that the projects had gone a long way in tackling the dearth of basic infrastructure in the school.
“The dearth of classrooms, lecture theatres, power supply, student hostels, office accommodation, library space and facilities are major challenges my administration faced when I assumed office two years-ago,’’ he said.
The vice chancellor said with the intervention of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, the university got 1000 sitting-capacity lecture theatre, Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies Building.
He said the inaugurated projects are the new Engineering Technology, School of Environmental Technology Building, Centre for Nuclear Energy Studies and Training and the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology building complexes.
The others are the School of Environmental Technology building, landscaping of the campus and the provision of solar energy lights on the campus.
He also commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on the completion of the giant student hostel building in the university.
He lauded the Federal Government for the release of N1 billion for the development of capital projects in each public funded university.

French to be part of UTME from 2014

Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa'I, said on Thursday in Abuja that French language would be part of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination as from 2014 for interested candidates, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Rufa'I said this at a reception held in honour of the French Language Project Manager, Mr. Jean-Phillipe Roy.
She said that being multi-lingual in the 21st Century was essential asit helps individuals to operate more effectively in the international community.
"For Nigeria, the study of French language is quite key, considering the fact that our neighbouring countries are French-speaking. Apart from the English language, French language is one of the major international languages," she said.
She said Roy came to Nigeria in 2009 under the second Bilateral Agreement between Nigeria and French.
The minister noted that the French had worked hard to ensure that various components of the project received due attention.
Rufa'i lauded his contributions to the reform of the UTME for 2014 in addition to the scholarships awarded to 16 teachers of French language to study in France for one month.
She said the project manager's contributions included supply of books to schools, award of Master's degree in French as a foreign language and supply of DVD and CD player to the project office.
The minister lauded the support of the French Government to the Nigerian French Language Village, Badagry, Lagos; and the Regional Network of French Language centres in Africa.
She also commended the Association of French Language Teachers, and noted the proposed handing over of the project vehicle to the ministry for the monitoring of the teaching and learning of the language.
"Nigeria and France have come a long way in their relationship. It is a relationship built on mutual respect, cooperation and interest. I wish to assure you that the ministry will continue to be committed to the teaching and learning of French Language in Nigeria and sustenance of the cordial relationship,'' she said.
Roy praised the collaboration between the Federal Government and the French Government.
"Since I have been here, you have shown a lot of interest in what we have been trying to do in terms of decision-making in critical issues and, with your help, we have been able to keep the project on the right track," he said.

ASUU to FG: N92 billion Is a Debt, Not a New Demand

Pulpit rock

The AcademicStaff Union of Universities, ASUU, on August 22, 2013, Thursday, described as highly embarrassing, the statement credited to the Coordinating Minister of the economy and Ministerof Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
The statement said that the lecturers were making a fresh demand from the Federal Government.
Dr. Usman Abubakar, ASUU zonal coordinator in Bauchi, told the newsmen that ASUU was not making fresh demand, but asking for the implementation of existing agreement, while the Minister's position was opposite.
"Contrary to the Minister's assertion that "ASUU is demanding for N92 billion", we wish to inform the public that the said amount is a debt, not a demand. It is a debt the Federal Government is owing staff of affected universities (both academic and non-academic) over a period of four years. The Federal Government has to pay, if it has to show signs of a responsible and honourable government."
The ASUU coordinator also expressed shock at the insincerity and antics of the government, saying the Minister's pronouncement was a deliberate and calculated attempt to blackmail ASUU, confuse the public and reduce ASUU's patriotic cause to a mere payment of allowances.
According to Dr. Abubakar, the Minister's comment is an indication that government had no intention of honouring the agreement, saying "how could the minister have made the claim of no money to honour the agreement when the finance ministry was represented throughout the negotiations in the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement and the MoU. What could be more dishonourable and deceitful by a government than this?

Groups protest against FG-ASUU impasse

Some civil society groups and students' organisations, on Tuesday, staged a protest march against the prolonged impasse between the Federal Government and the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The placard-carrying protesters said the Federal Government-ASUU disagreement had paralysed academic work in the universities.
The angry groups includethe Concerned Nigerian Students; Coalition of EdoYouths Organisation; EdoYouth Congress; Edo State Students; Comrade Across the Nation; South-South Youth League; and Edo Youth for Good Government.
They converged on the Nigeria Union of Journalists' Press Centre, in Benin, berating the Federal Government over what they described as government's unwillingness to address the rot in the nation's universities.
The protesters, who brandished placards with inscriptions such as, "Weare Nigerian Undergraduates Unemployed," "Education is a Right," and "Federal Government Answer ASUU," among others, said the break down in the FG/ASUU talk should be blamed on the former.
Former ASUU chairman, University of Benin chapter, Dr. Kashetu Ilavbare, said the presence of some of the ASUU members in the midst of the protesters was to guide them, so that they would not take the laws into their hands.
He said, "We don't have anything to do with them; but we got information that they were on the road, so we came to guide them so that they will not destroy anything and to make it peaceful. You can see they are rational people.
"There is need for infrastructure both in theschools and outside, so that is why we are trying to ensure they don't go on the rampage."
The protesters in a statement read by one Omobude Agho, called on patriotic Nigerians to support the action and toenlighten parents and others on why they were agitating.
The statement read in part, "Investigations have shown that the issues at stake are far and above the demand for higher wages. ASUU has resumed its strike because the Federal Government of Nigeria has failed to honour the agreement that it enteredinto with ASUU in 2009.
"This agreement provided for governmentfunding of quality higher education for Nigerians. Provision of teaching andlearning facilities, lab equipment for science students and research grants, payment of earned allowances, retirement age and progressive increase in annual budgetary allocation to the educational sector of 26 per cent, which is the UN standard.
"ASUU has used all alternatives possible in labour relations: lobbying, negotiations, letters, warning strikes, begging, press releases and conferences. However, government has refused to honour the agreement that it willingly signed with ASUU."

ASUU/ASUP Crisis: Varsities turn ghost towns; poly students fear fresh strike

By September 1, the face-off between the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will be exactly in its third month. Unlike previous strikes,  this particular one is still in its infancy. Students have been known to do a four-year course in eight years.

While the warriors continue their fight in air-conditioned rooms with sumptuous meals, some students have gone to learn trades. A final year student of Lagos State University, LASU, seems to be honing her skill in comedy. She said “My friends outside Nigeria are asking me the meaning of ASUU. I tell them it’s a Federal Government-sponsored annual festival in Nigerian universities whereby students are not allowed to go to school!”

Schools have become soulless structures. Not entirely, though. Final year students still drag themselves around campuses with an effort, trying to complete their project works without supervisors. Lecture halls are under lock and key and the banking halls bereft of customers.

Law lecture theater, University of Ibadan

Law lecture theater, University of Ibadan

Mr. Jerry Adeyiwa and Mr. Olumide Aderigbigbe, both non-academic staff at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, said since the commencement of the strike, the campus has been boring as students and lecturers come in trickles.

They said “Though work still goes on as usual for non-academic staff, the campus is a shadow of itself, save for some lecturers who just breeze in and some students that come to read or write their projects.”

A visit round campuses revealed empty structures and a sort of emptiness in the students that spoke with Vanguard Learning.

Olaitan Olanrewaju and Jennifer Egwuogu are both final year students of UNILAG and UNN, respectively. They were in school trying to tidy up their projects.

Olanrewaju said “Because of the facilities in school, I can’t afford to go home. I plan to complete my project before the strike is called off. All I have to do is e-mail the project to my supervisor and pray she attends to it.”

Blessing and Priscilla, final year students of English Education, and Majekodunmi Ayo, Seun Lawal and Lanre Hasan, also final year students, all said they were in school because of their projects, which they prefer to work on now that there is some quiet in school.

Recreation centre, UNILAG

Recreation centre, UNILAG

Meanwhile, polytechnics are teeming with students who are excited to be back in school after the ASUP strike. Students of Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, had barely resumed from the strike when they were faced with the task of writing their first semester examinations.

The Student Union Government, SUG, President of the Polytechnic, Mr. Oluwasijibomi Owolade, a HND 2 student of Mathematics and Statistics, said; “After the strike, we were given barely two weeks to prepare for the examinations. We are rounding off examinations at the moment, and will begin the second semester by Monday.”

Although Owolade was an active supporter of the last strike, he says that he and many other students are not pleased with hints that ASUP might resume the strike next month. “I am still on the look out for that,” he says. “Although I was fully on board last time, I am not ready to go back to that position again. I was disappointed when ASUP called off the strike without its demands being met.”

Owolade is not the only one with this view. The SUG President, Federal Polytechnic Ede, Bashir Adewale, says he would “be a fool to support another ASUP strike. I have about two to three months until graduation, and I am tired of strike.

“I am a firm believer that we should do the right thing at the right time, and I think that ASUP should have waited till their demands were met before calling off the strike. But since the strike has been called off, I just want to graduate and carry on with my life.”

Moses Okenla, a final year Mechanical Engineering student at Yaba College of Technology, who prayed that ASUP should not resume the strike, said he hopes to graduate unhindered in the next few months.

The situation on campus is the same at the Lagos State Polytechnic as students are busy with their normal academic activities.

One thing is certain, ASUU, ASUP, and many other unions linked with the academia, see strike as a veritable weapon to get their needs met. Only one result is sure: a progressive fall in the value of the certificates students leave Nigerian schools with. The irony is amusing – hope blew through higher institutions when academic degrees-touting politicians took over few years ago.

ASUU stirke: Groups, students protest in Benin

BENIN CITY- ECONOMIC activities were grounded in Benin City Tuesday for over one hour, when coalition of civil society organizations and students, protested against the attitude of the Federal Government in the current strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of
Universities (ASUU).

The placard-carrying groups, including Concerned Nigerian Students, Coalition of Edo Youths Organisation, Edo Youth Congress, Edo State Students, Comrade Across the Nation, South-South Youth League and Edo Youth for Good Government, described the Federal Government’s seeming refusal to meet the demands of ASUU as wicked, just as they backed ASUU for sticking to their guns in their demand.

The protesters who brandished placards, some of which read, “We are Nigerian Undergraduates Unemployed,” “Education is a Right,” “Federal Government Answer ASUU,” said the present impasse in FG/ASUU talk breakdown should be blamed on the former.

Former ASUU chairman, University of Benin chapter, Dr Kashetu Ilavbare, who was sighted around the protesters, said the presence of some of the ASUU members was to guide the protesters, so that they do not take the laws into their hands.

There Is No Need For ASUU To Continue Strike – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said there was no need for the Academic Staff Union of Universities to continue with their industrial action.

Jonathan said this at the inauguration of the Federal Government sponsored-Transformation Projects at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

Represented by Prof. Ruqayyat Rufai, the Minister of Education, the president said N30 billion had been released for the payment of earned allowances in all public universities.

The president said that the inaugurated projects were in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to providing quality education in the country.

He said the projects were based on the need assessment exercise conducted by the Federal Government in universities.

Jonathan urged the university administration to engage in research for national development, while stressing the need for proper maintenance of completed projects.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chidozie Asiabaka, in his speech, expressed joy at the completion of the structure.

ASUU Rejects FG Offers; Says Strike Must Continue

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday, rejected. the N130 billion the Federal Government disbursed into the university system, as part of efforts to persuade striking lecturers to call off the strike which began on July 2.
In a letter written to Head of National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy, NEEDs Assessment, and Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswan, by President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge. The union insisted that based on the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement and the January 2012 Memoranda of Understanding, MoU, signed by both parties, what was due for 2012 and 2013 was N500 billion, not N100 billion.
The letter read: “We observe that the Committee is so far mentioning only N100 billion. If the implementation is to be related to the funding requirements in the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement and the Jan 2012 MoU, what is due for 2012 and 2013 is N500 billion not N100 billion. Only the provision of this sum will meet the immediate needs of the universities.
“Our Union is very apprehensive of the manner in which the sources of the initial N100 billion to be used for the stimulation of the process are shrouded in secrecy. We believe that monies that already belong to the university system should not be blocked and recycled.
“This will not only be counter productive but will brew even deeper crises in the system. ASUU will not accept this.
“We are also concerned that a clear procedure or process for assessing the funds by the universities is yet to be defined. This concern is even more germane, given the statement of the Chairman of the Committee (during the last meeting on Monday, August 19, 2013) that the committee is taking some documents to the Due Process Office.
“We hasten to add that while due process must be followed, it is the sole responsibility of benefiting universities to respect all the provisions of the Procurement Act. The meaning of your Committee going to the Due Process Office is that it is the one that will be responsible for awarding contracts.
“We want to make it clear that this will never be acceptable to our union. We believe that monies meant to fund projects in universities should be sent to the universities, just as it is the practice with TETFund.”
The union condemned allocation of construction of 2,500 bed space hostel for N1billion, instead of 3,000 bed space for N1.2 billion.
“We are worried that instead of allocating N1.2 billion each to construct 3,000 bed space hostels to the 10 Category 1 universities, N1.0 billion for 2,500 bed space hostel to the 16 Category 2 universities, N500 million to construct 1,250 bed space hostels in the 12 Category 3 universities and N250 million each to construct 625 bed space hostels in the 13 Category 4 universities, the secretariat has changed that to constructing 1,400 bed space hostels in 25 universities at the cost of N2 billion each. We see no rationale in this.
“Expending N50 billion to construct 35,000 bed space hostels across 25 universities will be ridiculously scandalous since the same amount can be used to construct 125,000 bed space hostels across 51 universities. The standard cost of building a bed space ranges from N200,000.00 to a maximum of N400,000.00.
“This is even more worrisome, given the tangential suggestions made by the chairman that only monies for refurbishment will be sent to universities, while the rest will be handled centrally,” the union said.
The union also condemned the exclusion of 22 universities from the allocation for refurbishment of laboratories and libraries and three universities from the allocation for refurbishment of lecture theatres and lecture rooms.
According to ASUU, 24 universities are denied allocation for construction of libraries and laboratories, while two are denied allocation for construction of new lecture theatres and lecture rooms. 26 universities are denied allocation for construction of hostel

Solution to pending FUTO 2013/2014 Post UTME Results

FUTO---Several students reportedly are yet to see their performances Weeks after the release of their 2013/2014 post UTME results by the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), which can be accessed here using your jamb, confirmation no or application no.
Although FUTO is yet to officially make a press statement confirming the unavailability of results for some candidates online, futocommunity have been able to seek for a way around this problem.
Candidates who fall under this category are those who actually chose FUTO as either first and/or second choice in JAMB, scored 180 and above in the UTME, sat for the post UTME screening, and those must be students who were NOT caught in malpractice during the screening.
The problem
Possibly due to wrong shading of candidates' information, mistakes on the side of personnel handling the results at FUTO or some other possible causes.
Solution/how to get your result
1. Go to FUTO ICT center, near FUTO Micro Finance Bank.
2. Pay a little sum (About N300).
3. Write your detail as would be required of you and present to the ICT officials. E.g jamb reg no. Post utme application no, etc
4. They will "manually" search for your results using the result master list.
5. Confirm that result is yours, then request for a print out.

STRUCTURE:

  • Programmes of courses shall be provided in each school leading to Bachelor Degree

  • Instruction shall be by courses evaluated in terms of course units. A course unit is defined as a series of about fifteen one-hours lecture or series of about forty-five hours of laboratory work, or any equivalent work load, offered over one semester of 15 weeks. The following terms shall apply in evaluation:

  1.  Grade Point (GP) – the Grade Point derives from the actual percentage, raw score for a given course; the raw score is converted into letter grade (A to F) and a grade point (5 to 0).

  2. Total Grade Point (TGP) - this derives from multiplying the grade point by the unit per course.

  3. Total Number of Unit (TNU)- this is obtained by adding up all the units taken by the student in the semester

  4. Grade-Point Average (GPA)- Performance in any semester is reported in Grade Point Average. The GPA is obtained by multiplying the GP attained in each courses by the number of Unit assigned to that course and then summing these up and dividing by the total number of units taken for the semester.

Corruption in varsities: ICPC threatens prosecution

Pulpit rock

The Independent Corruption Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) has threatened to invoke its prosecution mandate on authorities of any higher institution that engages in financial indiscipline or recklessness.
Recent allegations of corrupt practices in tertiary institutions had forced the commission to set up a fact-finding machinery known as University System Study and Review (USSR) to investigate allegations bordering on corruption, admission policies, appointment and promotion of staff, and contract awards, among others.
The commission said it found out that there were infractions in all the stated areas and as such, it might soon begin the process of investigating with a view to prosecuting the authorities of any institution found culpable.
The executive member on the board of the commission, Prof.Olu Aina, who dropped the threat while presenting a lecture on the ICPC University Systems Study and Review (USSR), during the first technical committee meeting on the 2013/2014 admission to Most Preferred Degree Awarding Institutions in Uyo said: “From the findings of our USSR, there has been a gross abuse of the post-UTME as well as the phenomenon of discretionary quota in admission by the authorities of the institutions.
“The rules guiding these two must either be tightened or strictly adhered to otherwise; the post-UTME and discretionary admission should be scrapped.
He regretted that the nation’s institutions, which were expected to be at the vanguard of ethical education to correct the ills of the society had become the haven for corruption and corruption related practices.
“It was this that caused the ICPC to invoke its powers under Section 6 (b-d) of its enabling law to set up a team to conduct a comprehensive system study and review of the management and administration of Nigerian universities, which is one of the means of actualizing the preventive mandate of the commission,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Comfort Ekpo, represented in the meeting by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Okon Ansa, said over the years, the University of Uyo had ensured that only qualified candidates gained admission into the institution.

UNIBEN Releases 2013/2014 Teaching Hospital Nursing Entrance Examination Result

Entrance screening/test result for admission into the University of Benin Teaching Hospital has been released for 2013/2014.
University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) as a tertiary health facility came into being in 1973 following the enactment of an edict (number 12). As the sixth of the 1st generation Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria, it was established to complement her sister institution, University of Benin, and to provide secondary and tertiary care to the then Midwestern Region (now Edo and Delta State) and its environs.
It also provides necessary facilities for training of high and middle level manpower for the health industry and spearheads research opportunities for lecturers in the University and other interested persons with local morbidity burden as research question(s).
Through the Community Health Centres in Ogbona and Udo, and the General Practice Clinic that came on stream later, she equally provides some avenues for primary health care to the immediate communities.
At inception its goals were encapsulated in her motto for Healing, Research and Training. Initially commissioned as a 300 bedded hospital in 1973, UBTH which is located on the Benin – Lagos Expressway, has expanded her facilities tremendously over the years such that she now has facilities for over 500 in-patients.
How to check the UBTH 2013 screening results

Nigerian students spend N100bn on tuitionin Ghanaian varsities

Over 200,000 Nigerian students studying in Ghanaian universities are reported to expend over N100billion annually as tuition outside sundry fees.
Former lawmaker and educationists, Senator David Iornem, who disclosed this yesterday at a briefing to mark his 64th birthday anniversary in Makurdi, said the figure represented a major capital flight from the country.
According to him, “available figures show that the over 200,000 Nigerians currently studying in Ghana, expend over N100 billion annually on tuition and sundry fees. This situation arose because official figures show that out of N1.7million Nigerians seeking admission into institutions of higher learning, only 500,000 find placements leaving many with no other option but to seek admission in Ghana.
The federal government should take immediate steps to unbundling the higher education sector in Nigeria by adopting the United Kingdom, American, Malaysian and German models which allows for the establishment of small university colleges by willing entrepreneurs.
“In these countries, small university colleges which may be affiliated to bigger universities are set up by small scale entrepreneurs with adequate resources. I believe that when we kick start this process, more than 500,000 university places will be created in the first year.
“This can be achieved by involving small entrepreneurs and allowing existing universities to set up satellite campuses. By the third year ofstarting this system, no Nigerian youth wanting to enter a university, polytechnic or a college of education will have any difficulty or denied the opportunity to development him or herself.
Prof. Iornem added, “it is totally unacceptable to officially shut the door against young Nigerians wanting admission, thereby, leaving them stranded and hopeless; we must return the higher education sector to its days of glory when brilliant young people were sure of their future.

2015: Ogboru endorses Okowa

DELTA -AHEAD of the 2015 general elections in the country, a prominent political leader in Delta State, Chief Julius Ogboru has identified Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa as the most capable to pilot the affairs of Delta State among those eying the governorship seat in the state. He noted that Okowa has the pedigree and required experience to govern the oil-rich state.
Chief Ogboru, who made the declaration at Abraka, Ethiope East local government area of Delta State, recently, at the formal inauguration of D-PEACE, a political pressure group championing equity and fairness in the governance ofthe state, said, having painstakingly assessed those being touted as interested in governing the state, he found Okowa to be most eligible in terms of experience, past records of good performance, reach and grassroots connection.
He stressed that Okowa was best suited to give focus leadership to the people of Delta State come 2015, adding that he was totally convinced of Okowa’s credibility, capability and genuine intention for the state, describing Okowa as a humble and God-fearing man, who has continued to identify with the people.
While commending D-PEACE on what he referred to as a bold and noble cause, Chief Ogboru, who was made the patron of the group at the event, endorsed Okowa’s aspiration and pledged to mobilised not only the people of Ethiope East but the entire Delta State to support Okowa’s governorship quest, which he said was in the best interest of the people of the state.
He described Senator Okowa as a very marketable candidate and personality, given his unsullied public service records as a politician, adding that many Deltans and non-Deltans have continued to speak glowingly of him due to his integrity and selfless service.
In his remark, the State Chief Project Coordinator of D-PEACE, Olorogun David Omoru said the group would not relent in its campaign for equity, fairness and enthronement of a Delta Northerner as governor of the state in 2015.
He observed that prominent leaders as Chief E. K. Clark, Senate President, David Mark and former President, Olusegun Obasanjo have lent their voice and support for Delta North to produce the next governor of the state.
He said the choice of Senator Ifeanyi Okowa by D-PEACE was borne out of the fact thatover the years, he had displayed uncommon leadership qualities that had impressed and endeared him to countless Deltans who are desirous of his emergence as governor of the state come 2015.
He said Okowa was singled out because of his political maturity, grassroots reach and detribalised disposition, which makes him acceptable across the three senatorial districts in the state.
Also, the State Chairman of D-PEACE, Dr. Goodnews Agbi, said support for Senator Okowa for the governorship was based primarily on his credibility and antecedents, adding that Okowa had performed creditably in all the public offices he had occupied without blemish. He said he had watched him closely since he was a commissioner before becoming SSG and now a Senator, and was impressed with his performance and general disposition to public office.
Earlier, in his speech, the Coordinator of D-PEACE, Ethiope East local government area chapter, Mr. Martins Jessa, noted that the main objective of the group is to support the cause of equity, farness and justice in the politics of Delta State.
“D-PEACE whole heartedly supports Delta North for the governorship in 2015. And our preferred choice for the position is no other person than Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, aman that has distinguished himself as a true and unassuming leader, who sees public office as opportunity to touch and enrich lives,” Mr. Jessa stated.
Some persons who spoke to newsmen shortly after the inauguration included Engr. Eborka and Mr. Jonathan Onwuka, Secretary and Publicity Secretary of D-PEACE respectively, and also Mr. Kent Okiemute who hailed the massive turn out of people of the area to witness the event, adding that it was a confirmation of their belief and confidence in the cause of D-PEACE for a better Delta State.
Mr. Onwuka described Senator Okowa as a role model, who has continued to demonstrate exemplary leadership qualities and deep intellectual ability, adding that his political ascendancy had been marked by great respect and empowerment of people.

The Delta North branch of Crusaders- a Political Pressure Group fighting for sustenance of good governance and for Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa to be Governor in the state, held its meeting at Ika National Hall last Friday with the goal of unifying Anioma People in common interest of the people.
While appreciating the people for attending the meeting, Hon. Ifeanyi Eboigbe urged them to work in unity and maintain peace and order, and also approach those not working with them, to be the laudable programme.
“We have to come and work because the person we are working for is not a hidden person, do not pass judgement on those not working with us but approach them to make them see reasons why Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa should be the next Governor of the State. Let us not create enemity so we can work in peace, when he emerges governor, it will before all”, he said.
Hon. Eboigbe remarked that the primary assignment of the group is to ensure there is spirit of oneness among them without fraction geared towards achieving victory and also on the need to have a structure from the unit level.
Chief Douglas Okolotu noted that the essence of political game is to have a political belief that Delta North must produce the next governor.
“The person we want is Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, he will be there to look after our affairs, so go home and begin to work and do not discriminate others canvassing for Okowa as next governor 2015”, he said.
Elder John Nwagimeje described Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa as a discipline man, humble and one who realizes that power belongs to the people. “Okowa is a household name, he is grassroot mobilizer, he is not tribalistic, and his time is now”, he noted.
While commending Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa for his contributions to the General Hospital, Agbor, Elder Nwagimeje further stated that Dr. Okowa understands the people very well and that Deltans will have reasons to smile when he emerges the next governor in 2015.

ASUU STRIKE: BREAKING NEWS

ASUU strike !!! ﻧﻮﺭ ﺍﮔﺮ ﺭﻓﺖ ﺳﺎﯾﻪ ﭘﯿﺪﺍ ﻧﯿﺴﺖ ﺍﺭ ﻭ ﭼﺸﻢ ﺧﯿﺮﻩ ﻣﺎ ﻧﻘﺶ ﺳﺎﯾﻪ ﺩﮔﺮ ﻧﻤﯽ If I hear anything else, I'll let you know..

ASUU STRIKE: Business owners count losses, as group appeals to ASUU, FG

The current indefinite industrial action embarked by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has started taking its toll on persons that carry out their legitimate businesses in and around university campuses in Imo State.
Vanguard investigations in Federal University of Technology, Owerri and Imo State University, Owerri, revealed that most proprietors of the businesses have either closed shop or downsized their workforce, following their sagging income.
As at the last count, hair dressing salons, computer operators, recharge card hawkers, stationery dealers, restaurant owners and others are counting their losses as a result of non-patronage from mainly students.
Meanwhile, the national leadership of ASUU and the Federal Government have been urged to consider the plight of Nigerian undergraduates and allow immediate resumption of studies in their various institutions.
Members of the University of Jos Alumni Association, UJAA, South East Zone, made the passionate appeal in a communique issued at the end of their quarterly meeting and signed by the Zonal Coordinator, Sir Ned Ulelu.
“We passionately appeal to the national leadership of ASUU and the Federal Government to come to terms and end the current industrial action that has truncated academic activities in the nation’s universities for several weeks”, UJAA pleaded.

ASUU strike: Jonathan approves N400bn lifeline –SSANU

The end to the present strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be in sight as President Goodluck Jonathan has approved N400 billion for the infrastructural development of Nigerian universities.
The document to this effect is expected to be made available today at the meeting of the presidential committee on implementation of the NEEDS assessment in the universities with the leaders of the four university-based unions – the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The President of SSANU, Samson Ugwoke, made the revelation while addressing his union members at the SSANU National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the weekend at the University of Abuja.
Ugwoke, briefing the SSANU members on the activities of the NEEDS assesment implementation committee, led by Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam. He noted that the fund was different from the N100 billion Governor Suswam had raised from donor agencies and big companies to tackle the problems of Nigerian universities in 2013.
The labour leader said: “Let me give you a tip on what the NEEDS assessment committee is doing. The president has approved that within the next four years; N400 billion would be expended in infrastructural development of Nigerian universities, to transform the universities to international standard.
“N100 billion has already been raised by Suswam committee out of which 61 universities have been pencilled down, as contained in the NEEDS assessement committee. The N100 billion is expected to address needs of the universities in the areas which include re-furbishing and renovation of lecture theatres and lecture halls, re-furbishing and renovation of laboratories/libraries and the renovation of hostels.
“The second category is building of new hostels of international standard, self-contained rooms, the latest model in the world. That is the standard to be built in every university, and also the state-of-the-art laboratories as well as classrooms, lecture theatres and the halls.”
Ugwoke pointed out that the money had been shared and out of the N100 billion, N96 billion had been sent to universities.
He added: “The committee is meeting again on Monday, and by Monday (today 19th August 2013), the document will be out. This time around, it is not only by giving university money, but it will be monitored to ensure that the money is used to transform the universities, to bail universities out of the present situation and developed to an international recognized university standard.

Youths give FG 7 days to resolve dispute with ASUU

The Federal government has been given a seven-day ultimatum to resolve the impasse with striking universities lecturers or face the wrath of Nigerian youth.
Besides, the failure to honour its agreement with Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is seen as a ploy to completely destroy the nation’s education.
In an open letter to President Goodluck Jonathan titled “The ASUU strike and the need for urgent action to save our educational system”, a youth leader comrade Timi Frank stated that it is ironic that the wealth of the country is being frittered away through frivolous projects and pervasive corruption while education upon which a brighter future is built is being destroyed.
He reminded the President that if N2trillion was expended between 2010 and 2011, to bail out banks to save the nation’s financial sector even when it was obvious that some of the funds were embezzled, it will be worth the while if the government will apply the same emergency arrangements to put an end to the decay in the education system.
He lamented that a government that spent N2.3trillion instead of the budgeted and appropriated N280 billion in 2011 in the name of subsidy and introduced SURE- P as a way of absorbing the negative impact on the economy, should by all ramifications be able to afford the N90 billion for the universities lecturers without much stress.

FUTO 2013: ASPIRANTS WITH "Your result has not been uploaded into the system.".read this

The Federal University of technology Owerri, has finally released all Futo 2013 Post UTME result, according to my observations, the uploading of results began on monday and ended on 16th of august 2013. However, over 15% of names are yet to be released, and no form of exam malpractice was recorded, so i wonder whats holding it back.
the exam was said to be very tough, over 35% scored 180 and 15% above 180, while of 50% got below 180. The general futo cut-off mark stands at 180. Followed by the Departmental cut of marks which are yet to be released by the schools.
HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR AVERAGE MARK
The average mark can be calculated by adding your jamb/utme score Post utme score, then divide by two. Eg jamb:180 pume :180=260. Divide 260 by 2=180.
HOW TO CHECK RESULT
visit: utme.futo.edu.ng
enter any of your jamb reg no, or etranzact confirmation pin, or application no,(eg UT01234). If your result shows" Your result has not been uploaded into the system." kindly rush to the Futo ICT centre with your photocard if available or your jamb reg no, UT no. And confirmation pin, to submit your complaints for verification. However its learnt that the cause of this 'no result' is a result of wrong impute of jamb reg no.
Please don't fail by monday, and share this to friends. Some are unaware that the result is out.

David-West blames Jonathan for prolonged ASUU strike

A former Petroleum Minister, Prof Tam David-West, yesterday criticised President Goodluck Jonathan for refusing to accede to the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The former minister also berated the Finance Minister and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, senators and government appointees for draining the nation’s purse through what he called reckless spending.
Prof David-West spoke at a Town Hall meeting, organised by University of Ibadan (UI) chapter of the ASUU at the Mapo Hall, Ibadan.
He lashed out at Dr Okonjo-Iweala for her comments on the Federal Government’s 2009 agreement with ASUU.
The academic noted that there are more thieves in government than there are saints in Nigeria.
According to him, a government which said it spent N8 trillion illegally must be made by Nigerians to fund public education.
Prof David-West stressed that any government, which fails to invest in education is a vagabond government.
He said: “Any government that fails to invest in education is a vagabond government. The problem with Nigeria is that we have more thieves than saints in government. We drill over twomillion barrels of crude oil per day. Why should we be poor?
“ASUU is saying that the government should spend the money to improve the quality of education for our children and those yet unborn. The same government that does not have money for education budgeted N1 billion each to feed the President and the Vice President for just a year. Are they eating rock in Aso Rock? If you went to school without shoes, ensure that your children have shoes. Good parents pray that their children must be better than them.”
Other speakers at the event included the National Treasurer of ASUU, Dr Ademola Aremu; Oyo State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Dr Olanrewaju Bashir; UI chapter of ASUU Chairman, Dr Segun Ajiboye; Dr Biodun Badmus of the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB); Comrade Mashood Erubami, Comrade Abiodun Aremu, Mr Femi Aborishade, among other activists.
Prof David-West said Dr Okonjo-Iweala lacked the morality to budget N2 billion annually for Jonathan’s and Namadi Sambo’s food and still claim that the same government cannot meet the education needs of the masses.
The former minister said the Finance Minister was being paid $2 million a month under the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, without her rejecting it or insisting that she should be paid in naira to improve the economy.
He wondered what President Jonathan is doing with 10 presidential jets while President of the United States, Barack Obama, has only one.
Prof David-West noted that the possession of a university degree does not make one a good administrator.
