allstudentcampus regret to inform all ABU prospective students that the university has canceled the admission list released.

This is the first time we will report such news. It has never been heard in the recent few years that a university, after making an admission list available on its official website, came out boldly to announce the cancellation.

Below is a message delivered by the university on her website announcing this cancellation;

Public Notice on ABU 2012/2013 Admission List

"The Management of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria regrets to announce to the general public that the 2012/2013 Admission list earlier published is done in an error .Authentic Admission list would be published on this site in due course.

By this notice the general public is hereby advised to disregard any admission that might have emanated from the earlier published list."

Meanwhile the university management has failed to state the reason(s) behind this action. We urge the students to keep their fingers crossed as our investigation team is sniffing to uncover the story.

The previous list released by the institution is however still available on Myschool. You can check it by clicking here. Our hope is that not much will change in any new list to be published soon so if you find your name in this list, there is a glimmer of hope.

Secrets to Winning Scholarships to Study Abroad

The lack of money or poverty doesn’t have stand between you and reading the course you want, home or abroad. Hundreds of scholarships are available that can cover all the cost or at least most of the cost of your program.

Unfortunately, many students don’t apply for scholarships because they feel that their chance of winning a scholarship is as likely as winning the lottery. However, applying for a winning scholarship doesn’t have to be difficult. Having been on both sides of the scholarship process, once as a scholarship recipient, presently as a scholarship student and then as a scholarship application reviewer, I have learned several simple yet effective "secrets" that can improve your chances of winning scholarships to study abroad!

Secret 1: Apply for Scholarships

This might seem obvious, but you would be surprised how many students don’t apply for scholarships. Often, students who fail to apply for a scholarship convince themselves that doing so is a waste of time because they won’t win. Unfortunately, too many students take this point of view and fail to apply for scholarships leaving only a brave few with the increased probability of winning.

Secret 2: Increase your Odds

Apply for as many scholarships as possible. The more scholarships you apply for, the better chance you have of receiving an award. This point might seem obvious too, but most students only apply for 1-3 scholarships believing that number is enough to cover the cost of their study abroad program. This approach is a major mistake. Very few individual scholarships can pay for your entire study abroad program. To increase your odds of winning several scholarships, you will need to apply for at least 10-20 scholarships. Give yourself 4-6 months of preparation time to ensure the process is not overwhelming.

Secret 3: Stand Out! Write Towards your Diversity

We all have something about us that makes us unique and different from others. Whatever makes you unique, use it to craft a captivating application that gets the scholarship reviewers attention. There is no limit to what experiences you can use to demonstrate your diversity or uniqueness. If you have certain unique experiences from being an ethnic minority student or if you are the first person in your family who will go abroad, use these aspects of your background to enhance your application. By incorporating these experiences into your application, you will gain an advantage over other applicants who fail to act similarly, because scholarship programs are always looking to diversify their pool of scholarship recipients.

Secret 4: Choose Non-Traditional Locations and Critical Languages

Another way to increase your odds of receiving a scholarship is by applying to study in non-traditional locations or critical languages. Many scholarship programs want to provide scholarships to applicants going to diverse locations, Like India, Kuwait, etc.

The more uncommon the destination, the better your chances for receiving certain scholarships, like the OERL Scholarships. For example, if you are applying for a scholarship to study in London and 10,000 other students hand in quality applications to study in London, your chances of winning the scholarship is 1:10,000. However, if you are planning to study in India and only 500 applicants hand in applications to study in there, you have a higher probability of winning.

This principle also applies for admission into courses offered by local universities in Nigeria. The more the applicants, the less your chances of getting admitted. Get my book on university admission guide/course [Admission-101] to figure out more on admission success secrets.

Secret 5: Demonstrate Personal Value

Although you may freely apply for scholarships, most scholarships come with strings attached. In most cases, your responsibilities may be as simple as sharing your study abroad experience with other students. In other cases, the requirements can be more intense, such as having to agree to serve with the civil service after completing your degree. In some cases, you may have to pay to apply. With these considerations in mind, research the organization providing the scholarship and frame your application in a way that demonstrates your value and how you will contribute to their goals. Visiting the organization’s website and reading their “about” and “mission statement” sections is a good place to start.

Use their information to craft your essays, resumes, curriculum vitae, and any other applicable documents. For instance, folks interested in winning OERL scholarships can get their past questions, free of charge.

Secret 6: Be Creative

Creativity can help you win scholarships. By being creative, you demonstrate that you are willing to go far and beyond most other scholarship applicants. This dedication impresses scholarship reviewers who spend hours reading through hundreds of uninteresting applications. Let your application be the one that makes them wake up and pay attention.

Being creative can take many forms. If the scholarship requires a video essay, make a video that engages the reviewer. The last thing you would want to do is open your laptop and press record on your webcam. Put some effort into it. Pay attention to your lighting, and add quality audio and background music. If the application requires a written essay or personal statement, make it as engaging as possible. Produce a creative narrative that not only answers the essay question, but creates images in the reviewers mind. Consider using metaphors or even poetry or foreign quotes written in the language or country of interest. Having your essay stating with a quote in Chinese followed by an explanation that ties into the theme of your essay can work wonders!

Secret 7: Follow the Rules

The biggest mistake many students make when applying for a scholarship is the failure to follow the rules. Do you really want to disqualify yourself after putting in all the time and effort to apply? During nearly every scholarship season, some students disqualify themselves from the competition simply by not following the rules.

To guarantee you will not be one of these ill-fated students, write down the requirements for the scholarship on a checklist. Check off each requirement as you go through the process of completing the application.

By paying attention to these rules, you will increase our odds of receiving a scholarship. Don't forget to say thanks below if you love this exposition of mine.

University Workers Threaten Strike Over Allowance

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), in conjunction with Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike to press for implementation of what it described as "Earned Allowance" by the Federal Government.

National President of SSANU, Comrade Samson Ugwoke, gave the indication at the weekend in Uyo, during the National Executive Council (NEC) of the association at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Ugwoke, while addressing delegates at the meeting expressed disappointment at the failure of the Federal Government to capture Earned Allowances for non teaching staff in Nigerian universities in the 2013 budget, despite various presentations and negotiations with the appropriate authorities.

"We made presentations and negotiated with relevant bodies, but we are surprised that our Earned Allowance was not reflected in the 2013 budget presented by the president," he said.

He said for peace and industrial harmony to prevail in the university system in 2013, the Federal Government should urgently make provision for arrears and payment of Earned Allowances to non teaching staff in the university system.

He also called on stakeholders in the education system to join forces with SSANU, NASU and NAAT in prevailing upon the Federal Government not to maintain hard posture on matters regarding the welfare of non-teaching staff in Nigerian universities for the prevailing industrial harmony to be sustained.

UNIABUJA Students Protest In Demand for Own Govt (SUG)

Students of the University of Abuja who pro-tested for two days last week before the university was temporarily shut down are now demanding permission from management to constitute a Students' Union Government (SUG).

The students, in a statement Saturday, said the management of the university has denied them a union to "silence their rights" and threatened that unless the "Vice-chancellor Professor James Adelabu allows one to be constituted, examinations scheduled for December 3rd would not hold."

The statement also demanded an apology from the university's management for allegedly sponsoring attacks against the students during the protest.

They also demanded that admissions into the unaccredited faculties especially Engineering be withheld until, "The remaining four levels graduate in the next four years. After that there has to be a complete restart under the guidance of experienced academics that have performed well in other leading Nigerian universities."

They said agreeing to write examinations indicated that "we study in a proper university when that is not the case."

The statement also appealed to students to " remove the legitimacy of the VC's exploitative administration and his supporters in the Federal Government by refusing to study in a fake university until the conditions are appropriate."

Team University of Lagos Wins Google Application Contest

Three University of Lagos (UNILAG) students, have won the Google Apps Developer Challenge for the Enterprise/Small Business Solutions category in sub-Saharan Africa.

The students: Bolutife Ogunsola, Michael Adeyeri and Willie Aniebiet, created the Form+ application software; an interface that creates application forms by just dragging and dropping components.

The user can create forms - such as curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé submission forms for businesses and coursework submission page for lecturers.

Emeka Afigbo, Program Manager, Google, stated: "Our expectation is that this motivates more young Nigerian developers to develop apps that change the way we live in Nigeria and Africa at large."

The winners were rewarded with Chromebooks and $20,000.

IAAF Approves High Performance Training Centre for Uniport

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) at the weekend recorded another milestone, securing the citing of a High Performance Training Centre at the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport).

President of AFN, Chief Solomon Ogba, who attended the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Centenary Gala Show in Barcelona, Spain, confirmed at the weekend that the formal agreement to seal the deal would be signed in January.

"At last, we have been able to secure approval for a High Performance Training Centre from IAAF to help our athletes develop their talents. This is a welcome development for us at the AFN," said Ogba on telephone from Barcelona at the weekend.

The other two centres in Africa currently are situated in Eldoret in Kenya and Dakar, Senegal. Almost all of Kenya's Olympic and World Champions (past and present) have trained at this elite centre of excellence in middle and long distance races.

When fully operational, the Uniport Centre will specialise in Nigeria's area of strength like sprints, quarter miles and jumps.

The highlight of the IAAF Centenary Gala was the announcement of Jamaica's World and Olympic champion, Usain Bolt and American Allyson Felix, as 2012 Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

Bolt, who won the award for the fourth time, and Felix, a first-time winner, received their trophies and $100,000 prize at the Athletes of the Year Awards ceremony in the Grand Ballroom of the Pullman Skipper Hotel.

Bolt, 26, the World Athlete of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2011, successfully defended both his 100m and 200m titles at the Olympic Games in London, clocking 9.63 and 19.32 respectively, both the fastest times in the World this year.

He concluded his Olympic appearance by anchoring a Jamaican quartet to a 36.84 world record in the 4x100m Relay. He won six out of seven competitions in the 100m, and three of four in the 200m.

Jamaica's Head Coach, Glen Mills was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Felix, 27, following World 200m titles in 2005, 2007 and 2009, won the Olympic 200m title in London and was part of the gold medal-winning 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams to become the first woman since 1988 to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games.

The victorious 4x100m Relay quartet in London clocked a 40.82 World record. Her 21.69 victory in the 200m at the U.S. Olympic Trials was the fastest in the world this year and made Felix the fourth fastest woman in history.

Oyo to Make French Language Compulsory in Schools

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has said that public secondary schools in the state will be mandated to include French language in their respective curricular.

Besides, he said that all members of the state executive council would henceforth be exposed to training in French language.

The governor made this disclosure while receiving the French Consular-General, Mr. Francois Sastourne, who led his team on a courtesy visit to him at the Governor's Office.

This, he said, had become necessary in order to create avenue for the sharing of cultural experiences and activities with the French community and to widen the level of interaction between the people of the state and the neighboring countries most of which are French-speaking.

The governor said his administration would network with the French Consular-General to ensure that the French language training among members of the state executive council and in public secondary schools was made a reality.

In his response, the Consular-General said his visit was to promote economic cooperation between Oyo State and his home government.

He also emphasized the importance of French language to Nigerians, considering the fact that Nigeria is surrounded by French-speaking countries.

SSANU threatens to embark on strike by December

Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has threatened to embark on a week warning strike over non-inclusion of Earned Allowance for its members in the 2013 budget.

According to a statement yesterday by the national president of the association, Comrade Samson Ugwoke, the union said it was ready to resist any attempt to reduce non-academic work-force of universities.

"Anybody talking of touching the numbers of our members in the universities is playing with fire. We will not condone that.

This is a warning to the government, any committee recommending reduction in the workforce of non-teaching staff in universities should be resisted by SSANU and other unions. It is a warning to the Federal Government; they should allow the status quo to remain to ensure peace in the university system.

"This time around, we are giving a warning early enough. I made it clear that until a provision is made in the 2013 Budget for the payment of Earned Allowance, nobody can and will guarantee peace in the university sector come 2013.

I am appealing to the Federal Government to hear us very well, if that money is not included in the budget and paid, there will be no peace in the university system. We will close down the universities for one week in December as a warning (strike) to the government," he said.

NUC summons IMSU VCfor Illegal part-time programme

The National Universities Commission has shut down an illegal part-time programme allegedly operated by the Imo State University in Abuja.

The NUC also summoned the Vice-Chancellor of IMSU to Abuja to explain why the university is running a part-time programme in Abuja.

The illegal programme which is operated at the Junior Secondary School, Area 10, Abuja, was sealedon Saturday with the help of some armedpolicemen who accompanied the NUC Committee on Closure of Illegal Universities tothe venue.

The police also arrested the Coordinator of the Part-Time programme, Mr. A. C Odunze, who tried to run away when he saw the policemen.

A visiting Professor to the NUC and the Chairman of the Committee on Closure of Illegal Universities who was part of the sealing, AdebisiBalogun, also gavea graphic detail of the incident and how it was carried out.

He said, "You saw that most of the lecturers by the time we camein ran out of the classrooms. The said coordinator has been caughtand he is in police net. They are running an illegal institution.

On many occasions, the NUC has placed advertorials on illegal part-time programmes and some of the universities that are running those programmes; the NUC had talked to them.

"But unfortunately, the illegality still persists and this is one of the illegal outfits. This outfit is in conjunction with the Imo State University. There are regulations governing the establishment of part-time and affiliated programmes. And they are running so many programmes here that have not been approvedby the NUC.

"You can see the type of environment where they carry outthe illegality. This is not a conducive environment for learning. We once met the coordinator and told him that the programme had been abolished. But the information we had still showed that they were running the part-time programme.

"Having given the Imo State University several warnings, this programme is cancelled and the VC of Imo State University will be summoned to answer various questions. We are going to allowthe law to take its course. The coordinator was running away when we arrested him and took him to the police station.

"They had assured the students that the programmes they were running were legal, unfortunately it is a way of defrauding membersof the public. They have been able to deceive many people, collected money from them and even the students themselves were running when we got here and refused to listen to the appropriate authorities over the illegal programmes they are running.

"That is what the NUC has been saying, if you go and patronise anillegal outfit, your certificate is illegal, because at the end of the day, this certificate will still be verified by the NUC. And if NUC cannot verify your certificate, evenafter spending five to six years fora programme, then of course there is a problem. You can never use that certificate.

"Some of the students listened to us while others felt they had beenhere for the past five to six years and they deserve to get a certificate. Yes they deserve to geta certificate from the programme they have subscribed to, but whether this programme is legal or illegal is left for the coordinatorof the Imo State University and NUC to decide. And NUC is now saying that the programme is illegal."

Some of the students who spoke to journalists expressed disappointment over the development and vowed to see tothe end of thematter. They added that they could not just waste their money and time.

One of them, Mr. Aye Ayeni said, "The coordinator kept telling us that the programme is legal and that the NUC is aware of the part-time programme. I have spent five years on this programme and I am not ready tolet go just like that. I will see to the end of this."

Meanwhile, the coordinator of theprogramme, Odunze, according tothe police, will be in custody until the issue is resolved.

Also, One Concept College London situated in Gwarinpa area in Abuja, was shut down by NUC for illegal activities and the coordinator, Mr. Marcel Ezenwoye, was handed over to the policefor appropriate action.
