SIFE, an acronym for Students in Free Enterprise, is a body of students, academic and business leaders committed to using the power of entrepreneurship in community-based projects to transform lives and for sustainable development. SIFE came into existence in FUTO in the year 2006, and the team has since excelled to greater heights with projects that have impacted the lives of people in the community, improving their quality of life and standard of living.
On the 27th of February, 2013, SIFE FUTO launched a mobile phone health application at the Acerta Green Convention II, which held at Environmental Technology Auditorium, School of Environmental Technology, FUTO. This is a forum that brings all stakeholders in the FUTO community to discuss prevailing health and environmental issues. The Mobile application which was designed and programmed by FUTO students was born out of the need to tackle the slow response of medical services to emergencies and to curb some of the prevailing health issues in our community. This invention is a form of Telemedicine, putting SIFE FUTO as front liners in the promotion of this technology in our country. The application has the following features:
A search engine that links prevailing symptoms to possible diseases and proffers information and preventive measures for quick response in emergencies.
A diseases catalogue containing detailed information on some diseases, their general overview, occurrence rate in FUTO, symptoms and preventive measures.
A link to access the FUTO Health Report and a system that enables a user report emergencies to the Medical Centre before arrival.
Direct access to medical professionals for advice.
The content of the application was obtained through research by members of the project, and was verified by the Director of the Department of Medical Services, FUTO, Dr. Emerole, C. O. The FUTO ICT Center director, Prof. Gloria Chukudebe was also present at the Launching Event and she gave a resounding approval of the ingenuity of the project.
The Application is available now for Blackberry, Java and Symbian devices and can be downloaded at http://healthbookproject.wordpress.com/category/health-app/.
The event also witnessed the unveiling of the new name of SIFE FUTO. Its new name,Enactus, stands for Entrepreneurial, Action, Us in line with the new vision of the organization which is ‘enabling progress through entrepreneurial action’.The new name embodies what the organization stands for and will now be used for its activities with its partners and sponsors.
